Here are the final pics of my submission for the Battle of Britain GB 2006.  My goal with this build was to practice some weathing techniques by making a Spitfire as it would have looked during the darkest hour of the Battle of Britain.  This aircraft has been put through some serious use as England desperately tried to fend off the Luftwaffe.

My weathering was a bit heavy handed (this is only my 3rd aircraft in about 25 years).  I tried some new techniques and it was a great learning experience.

I lost 2 parts to the carpet monster.  The mirror that goes on top of the canopy glass was lost last night, and the clear lense that goes just behind the aerial mast vanished this morning.  I watched it drop in my spray booth, but it just vanished.  Sad [:(]

This was a great kit, the fit was excellent and required only minor filling with crazy glue for the seams.  The decals were great!  Tamiya provided a sheet of white decals to go underneath the roundels and insignia on the rudder, so the white in them wouldn't have any color from the camouflage be seen through it.  The downside to that arrangement is that it's tough when there is a big piece of raised detail that you need the decals to hunker down on.  I had that problem with the two roundels on the upper wing surfaces.  It took many applications of Micro Set to get the white roundel to hunker down.  I had to do the same with the actual roundel repeatedly, but I guess because it was on top of another decal, they wouldn't hunker down all the way and have the slightest wrinkles at those spots that I just couldn't get to go away.  Oh well.

All in all I'm satisified with my Spitfire, although next time I'll go a little easier on the weathering.  Thanks for this great GB, I really enjoyed it.  You guys all do amazing work and I'm glad I was able to participate.  Big Smile [:D]

Scott Looks great, to bad the carpet monster got the last word, the canopy worked out ok from what I can see from the pics .  Your weathering is fine the nice thing is the next build you'll get to practice somemore, you gota love the hobby.

Thanks Bear.  I learned a lot on this build.  The rest of my projects I do will lie between the two extremes of my "clean build" P-51D for the Allied Aces GB, and the Spitfire "filthy build", as far as the weathering goes.  Both of those projects were practice projects so I could learn and hopefully master some new techniques.  If feels so good to be back into aircraft modelling again.  And I have 3 finished airplanes in my display case now!  Big Smile [:D]

Oh, and the rear canopy piece looks fine.  There is a very straight hairline crack that runs parallel with the fuselage.  You can't even see it, unless you know what you're looking for, and you really scrutinize it.  Smile [:)]

Looks great Scott.  I got the exact same crack in my rear canopy too.  If you don't tell anyone.... it looks like a reflection of light.

Scott, great job on the Spit.

The weathering looks great.

Progress Update

The lid for the Emil arrived on Wednesday.

Managed to trash the first one, as per my usual form with vacform canopies.

Anyway the one that survived has been dunked in Future and is ready for masking, which won't take long as I also picked up the Eduard masking set.

So hopefully this one will be done by the end of this weekend.

Thanks Guys

It really doesn't help that the vac form canopy is oh so clear!

Put the prop and under cart on this evening.

Almost complete.

eh? not quite sure i get what you mean...

anyway, I'm looking forward to the finished pics. It was looking excellent from the progress.

I have that kit as well, along with a couple of detail items, which should serve to ruin the fit very nicely...

It's quite scary how fast they lose the innocense of youth these days!Wink [;)]

Any here are some pics of the Emil sans IP!

Great little kit, would have been built much faster, had I not cocked up the canopy.

Definitely one I would do again.

She is a real beauty... even without the IP.

(Fritz looks out the canopy to his wingman Hans and radios...Fritz does have a radio, doesn't he?..."How fast are we going?  How high are we? What's your oil pressure in case it is the same as mine? Where's your artificial horizon...are we in a slight dive?  That dial on the far left... I never really knew what is was for, but what does yours say anyway?"
