Just so I can prove I'm actually building, here is my progress so far on the Bf109F-4. Nothing spectacular, just plastic and glue at this point. I've had some fit issue with the cowl, but at this point I attribute this to my skill, not the kit. Otherwise it's been a fast, simple build. The tough part will be the camo. If I can duplicate Bob's work I'll be happy.

Mucker-thanks but the camo isn't that hard. Trust me-I'm not that good. The upper was masked off using silly putty-be careful though-sometimes new silly putty will react with paint (in my case, MM acrylic on a Panther tank).  One could use the process I used for the mottle.  The side mottle was accomplished by cutting out small holes in an index card (cut to size to fit the side fuselage) and attached by using blue tack (or other poster putty) to extent the hole out a bit.  Finally, a thinned (very thinned) mix of the base color is sprayed over the mottle to 'tone it down' a bit.  Nothing original, just processes picked up in FSM & the forums.

btw-looking good on your build.

...and a few more. I got the pre-shading and the lower surface RLM 76 on tonight. I see a few flaws and will touch up tomorrow. Mainly the front fuselage to wing root: I've missed a gap on both sides. The pictures don't show it well, but I half-arsed the aft fuselage seam and it looks rather poor. I've had a bad cold the last few days and the fatigue is getting to me.

I was miffed becuase I am out of my favorite paint, Color of Eagles, in RLM 76. I'm using Pollyscale, which is another one high on my list, but so far nothing matches the finish of CoE (from my experience).

Looks nice Mucker!  Cool [8D]

I was joking around with the guys that own/run my LHS the other day, that it would be nice if they were open 24/7 because I always run out of a paint when they are closed.  I suggested they put a vending machine out front for just such an emergency.  Wink [;)] Big Smile [:D]

Mucker-looking very nice.

Scott-I know what you mean...and my unorganized inventory doesn't help matters any.

Now THAT's innovation! They'd have to come with a "Born On" date, though...

Hey guys, I may ditch the pilot in my Bf109G-14.  If I do that I'm going to need to put some seatbelts on the seat.  Are there any sets of just seatbelts available out there for a Bf109G-14? (I would imagine the belts would be the same as on the G-6).

I don't know who actually has them in stock (maybe  Hobby Link Japan?), but check these out:

Scott-I think Eduard has a Luftwaffe set of belts-one each for the 109, 190 & 262...maybe one other plane.  And they are pre-painted.

ok...it's decision time.  When I put the underwing gun cover door on, I thought that it was a big gap.  Kit is designed to make an A-4 version, so there is a different part included for that one.  Well, I proceeded on, not worrying about it until I was putting on the stencils yesterday and noticed that the kit instructions didn't show a gap as big as the one I have...Censored [censored]...so I'm debating whether to chalk this one up to 'lesson learned' or try to fill it in & repaint that area.  Any thoughts?

Bob: My thought is to leave it as is. The justification is:

a. It doesn't stick out. In fact if you wouldn't have mentioned it I probably wouldn't have noticed it.

b. Considering "a", it's not worth damaging your already nice paint job. It's like declining a penalty on an extra point...never take points off the board and

c. It's on the underside of the wing so no one will see it once it's displayed.

That being said, if it's really bugging you, do what you need to do. I know sometimes I just have to go back and correct something to get it off my mind!

I agree with Mucker.  It's not really noticable, and if you hadn't said anything about it Bob I probably wouldn't have seen it.  Your model looks fantastic so far, so unless it's really bothering you I'd leave it as it is.  Smile [:)]

Thanks guys.  So far, the voting is 2 to 1.  Maybe I'll just remember (he says, hopefully) if/when I pickup the Hasegawa 190a4 kit.....

Well, I made some progress on my Bf109G-14 last night.  I attached the tail assemblies to each half and was about to glue both fuselage halves together when I decided to double check my references one last time to make sure the cockpit sides were painted correctly and ready to go.  (I'm trying to break the Espin curse.... we usually measure once, and end up having to cut twice.... Shock [:O] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]).  Well, I'm glad I did as I noticed I missed part of the oxygen system.  For those of you that don't already know and are interested in Bf109G series details......

Anything relating to the fuel system (gauges, fuel lines etc. were painted in yellow), anything relating to the oxygen system was painted blue.

I need to do a little touch up work on the yellow fuel lines as I got some yellow on the gray parts, and I missed painting the lines just to the right of what I already have painted blue.  Also, there is a short section in the middle of the fuel line that is actually clear so the pilot can see the fuel in the line, which I'll paint silver or something.  I'll take care of that tonight and get the fuselage put together.

Here is a shot of the right side as it is right now:

And here are two color reference photos I have:

Looking really nice so far, Scott. I hope this one will be finished with the top open. I saw the realn thing at the Air and Space Museum in DC. I don't think closterphoebic people could last long in a 109.

I dont know if these will help any, but I'll post them just in case.

Nice pics.  We went back east last year for my sister's wedding and spent some time at the Air and Space Museum while we were there.  What I wouldn't give to be able to get pictures from all different angles of that Bf109G-6!  It's hard to get good views of it since they have it jammed in the corner.

Hey Scott,

Thanks for adding me to this GB.  This is my first in many respects.  First time building a mini diorama, painting a figure, contributing to a GB...heck this is only the third model I've built since I was a little kid building a snap-tite kit using my mom's nail polish as paint!  So everyone, please be gentle Big Smile [:D]

I'm just about done with my Hartmann 109G-6...just have to add a few little details.  I'll post pics a little later to make the peanut gallery happy.  Smile [:)]  Until then, aloha!

I think you'll find that many of us have just recently gotten back into the hobby after a 25 year lapse.  Funny how that works, I used to crank out tons of models as a kid and not sure why I had stopped (except maybe because of girls and beer... heh heh).

I tell you, these forums are great.  They really accelerated my skills by learning so much from the others.  I'm looking forward to seeing some pics of your build.  Big Smile [:D]

As I read your mail, I noticed your "to build" list at the bottom. We  must have been separated at birth...it looks like my "recently built/to build soon" list!

Looking forward to pics of your build...

I totally agree with you there, Scott!  Without these forums I would still be looking for correct shades of nail polish to paint my models! Tongue [:P]  Thanks to everyone here who has given me the tools and inspiration to 'try' and do this hobby some justice.

Aloha,

Chris
