Hey everybody,

All your models look great! Sorry I haven't posted in a while. My parents are getting divorced, so modeling sort of took a backseat. I won't have any progress pictures for a while since no progress can be made until my mother and I move out. I packed all of the modeling supplies, paints, kits, tools, etc. into boxes and am just waiting to find a new place. Hope to start up again real soon!

Haha, same for me.  I applied a first coat of Tamiya Dark Sea Grey on the hull of my Bismarck yesterday and I had a hard time to figure out where I was applying it.  Once dry, you can only notice it because of the flatness of the paint.

So far, I think ship modelling is alot harder than it looked at first sight.  The masking and painting process is very time consuming.  Progress has been very slow lately because of that.  When the job is tedious like that, I get a little bit discouraged and I work at slow pace.  But I'll get it done somehow.

Oh yeah!  At least the railings!  Specially at 1/350.  It adds so much.  Next time I'll buy an "Ultimate set"

Hi Yan,

So far I have all the superstructure installed and painted and I now need to start adding the PE.  I hope to get some pics added once I get the time to take them.  Your railings look fabulous.  Mine still look like they have gone through a hurricane.   I can't wait to see yours painted.

This will be my first model where I have painted the PE before installing it.  I have always had a bugger of a time getting complete coverage on railings after they have been installed.  However, lets see how well the paint takes the stress of bending and folding.

Cheers,

Scott

Thanks Scott, I don't think I have any patience though!  My wife and kids could testify but you don't need patience when you're enjoying what you do.

I really enjoy ship modelling so far, it won't be my last ship that's for sure.

I made some progress lately.  Most of the railing on the upper structure has been installed, and this was tougher than I thought.  I'm still waiting to receive a second set of PE railing so I can install the railing on the main deck.  The toughest railing to install were the rounded ones around the searchlights.  I had to remove the plastic and also, the railing had to match perfectly where they meet and the result is not bad but could have been better if I had more experience.  I also drilled some port holes on the main structure cause they were all missing.  I don't have any PE set for the port holes and doors but I had at least to drill them.  I made some doors from styrene cause some of them were missing also.

So far, I have a lot of fun with this project but like I said earlier, I'm anxious about the painting.

Here are some pics:

I still have a lot of clean up to do and I must drill the barrel of the guns.

If a Tirpitz wouldn't be acceptable, I really wouldn't know what I would allow on this GB, welcome on board mate :)

A lot of scratchbuilding ahead of you Sean.  Good start.

I've progress a little bit myself but ship modeling is longer than I thought.  Now I'm drilling port holes on the main deck cause they are all missing from the kit.  I'm going to my LHS tomorrow and I'll try to get my hand on some PE set to add details.  And the Tom's modelworks PE set for the Bismarck doesn't have enough railing if you really want to install them where they supposed to be.  There are some plain plastic walls in some area that must be cutt off and replaced with railings.  It's a lot of fun so far but I'm anxious about the painting.  It will be either a masking nightmare or an awefull brush painting job.

Here is my first progress.

This week I started the assembly of the German aircraft carrier, Seydlitz. After a long period of reading and researching I finally came to a conclusion what was needed for this build. Instead of scratch building the entire model I decided to buy a 1/700 scale Prinz Eugen (Admiral Hipper class) kit. The Seydlitz was originally built as a Admiral Hipper class heavy cruiser, but was cancel and a conversion to an aircraft carrier was ordered, which was later cancel too. The hull is almost identical to that of the Prinz Eugen and only a few modifications are needed to convert it to a Seydlitz hull.

Here are some progress shots:

As you can see, I went ahead and removed all the molded detail from deck where a scratch-built "hanger" will be installed. I still need to make the modifications to the hull though before I can continue building.

Nothing!  I use two simple razor blades.  That's all I need for the moment but I will definitely buy the Fenderbender from Ausfwerk some day.

Thanks for the comments espins, can you give me some advice concerning the painting sequence of such a ship!  I'm clueless.

I'm afraid I can't really offer any advice.  The Bismarck I'm doing for this build will be the first ship I've built since I was a teenager! (over 25 years.... LOL) So I joined this build hoping to learn from the experts.  I'm looking to start my Bismark early December.  :)

I remember a while back when I was doing some research on the Tamiya Bismarck there were some websites that showed the builds in progress, which might help you on sequence.

Here is one of them:  http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/builds/tam/build_tam_bismarck.shtml

Ok, I've started this weekend.  I read somewhere that with ships, it is preferable to start from the end so I started building the super structure.  This is my first experience with ships and tinny PE set.  It's working good so far.  Since I took these pictures, I've cut a gutter to install the PE catapult.  It's a little bit twisted but it's good enough for me.

Now for painting ......  How do I proceed.   Here what I thought:  Paint the whole hull exterior.   Then paint the complete deck with a wood color, then mask the floors and paint the structures grey.  Of course, I'll try to paint in subassemblies when I can.

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks

The D-Day is coming for my Bismarck, I'm finishing up my Tamiya T-55A.  I'm at the stage of super detailing it prior to paint it.  Once that done, I'm jumping into ship modelling for the first time.  See you next week probably.

Nothing to report from the North Sea Fleet as well.  Spent this last week helping my 10 yr old with his Airfix F18 and I was building an old Revell P40 along with him.

I did manage to get a few deck details touched up.

Well, no progress worth mentioning on the S7, been filling, sanding and filling bits lately.  But I picked up Revell's "new" 1/144 Type XXI U-boot to keep it company.
I've been looking at the sprues of the u-boot and it'll sure take a lot of work to retrofit the hull, I truely don't understand why they chose to use the hull of their old "Welhelm Bauer" to make an "ordinary" Type XXI.
Another one that's on the way (my LHS didn't have it yet) is the also new 1/144 Type VII minelayer sub, I expect that kit next week or so.

Thats the set I got for this model.  I used the WEM set on my 1st Bismark but didn't want to spend the $$ on this Minicraft kit.  This PE set is still tops.  I started the radars 1st and, being a newb with PE, they went together without a hitch.  The hangar doors are pretty thick if you glue them strait to the hangar sides, I cut out the plastic on the originals and glued the PE sides in place and it looked a lot better.

My funnel screen was too large, but again, on this Minicraft kit, nothing seemed to fit right.  The aircraft details on this PE fret will make a big differnce to the kits planes.

The Tamiya has a lot of detail, the Minicraft kit has nothing on the sides of the superstructure, so the door and window set was a must.

I have begun putting the railing around the maindeck and will use maybe half the fret.  I too was concerned at first about running out, but now it looks like there will be enough rail for the whole ship.  If not, it doese hurt to order extra railing frets, you'll used them on other projects.

No doors or windows but a lot of tinny little pieces of trusses and braces.  I like it.  Have a look:

But I'm not sure there is enough railing to do the complete ship!!!!!  Is that possible?

Hi Dan

I see my name on the list of proposed participants which is fine.

Count me in.

I have been so inspired by your E Boat project.

I also got the chance to get the kit cheap just a week or so ago.  I now have two.

I am planning to do the Airfix E Boat as well.  This one OTTB and the other will be the full make over.

I hope thats ok if it is I am in on this GB.
