Hey guys, how can I darken and lighten my paint colors?? I want to do some pre shading, should I just use white and black??

By how much should I add to darken and lighten??

Thanks, Anthony.

I have finally begun, but only a bit here and there, and i need good weather to prime some parts.

@  Anthony14, i myself would use a darker or lighter version of the basecoat/primer for the preshade as i would not want to change the color (green under blue for example)

i've used black and white, but have found better results using the two base colors in the camo sceme you have,,,use the darker color to darken the light and the lighter to lighten the dark,,,try some scrap,,,it just makes the highlights a little less obvious

I put down the primer layer today.  Overall I'm please with how it came out,
but as always, the primer shows the places that still need a bit of work.

Thanks, I can't wait to start applying some REAL paint!  But first I
have a bit more work to do.

I spent a LOT of time adding antennas, nav lights, bumps & bulges
that the kit was missing.  Those little bumps (such as on the sides
of the nose) were built-up from putty and superglue.  It's really hard
to make a perfect teardrop-shaped feature that small, and I fell well
short of perfection.  I'm hoping that some very thick brush-applied
paint will make it nice and round.

Also, I broke the rudder when I was bending the control surface!  I
thought that the seam wouldn't be noticeable, but it is indeed quite
apparent (even more than in this particular picture).  I will do what
I can with it, but this might end up being one of those flaws that just
gets stuck on the model.  Maybe the paint will make it less obvious.
Or I guess I could just cut it off and make a new rudder out of sheet
styrene. hmmm..... :)

problems.........

i washed this kit good, primed it right,,,,now i have some areas on the lower rear that are lifting no matter what i do,,,i don't think stripping it is an option because the cockpit is installed(no wings, tail or stabs yet,,,,,any ideas?

Sand down that area and repaint it...

that's what i started doing, and light,LIGHT coats to get the gloss white back over the grey,,,,i think it was a problem with the primer,so i'll skip that on the fix

i'm hopeing that will be the worst problem with this build,i had such high hopes for a great build, now i think it'll just be an average finish

Great job everyone. I'm having fun following everyone's progress on their own Vipers! MPH34 - at least in a small way your tigerstriped bird is mine as well, I spent quite a bit of time maintaining 87-0241 as a member of the Torrejon based 614th TFS, deployed to Doha, Qatar.

241 flew 45 missions to Kuwait and Iraq during the war after she was sent down from the 613th TFS 'Squids' as a replacement for one of the aircraft that we'd lost on 19 Jan '91. For more info I invite you to visit the Lucky Devils in the Gulf War at: http://www.lucky-devils.net

I worked Blocks 1, 5 10, some 15, and 30 with P&W and GE engines, so if there are any mechanical questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Helloo.  How crazy do you have to be to join this GB?  I'm also a participant in the F-15 GB, since that's what I have on the bench.  I've bought a bunch of 1/48th F-16 decals in the last three weeks, mostly 2Bobs & Afterburner, but as of right now, I only have one measly kit, the Revellogram F-16ADF kit.  I'm waiting on 4 of the Hasegawa C kits to arrive.  Squadron is having a sale this month on the Academy 1/48th kit for $13. Might have to get me some of those.  Also, just ordered 4 Hasegawa F-16D kits from Roll models for $13 each, but I know I won't see those in my mailbox till early December.     I'm really undecided on what to do first.  I live in Dallas now, which is just next to Ft. Worth, home of the F-16.  Having said that, I could do an aircraft from one of the 2 ANG squadrons here in the state (Houston & San Antonio).  There is another Air Force Reserve  F-16 unit here in the metroplex, but decals don't exist for it yet.  I'm on an Adversary/Aggressor kick, so I could do one of those.  I managed to get some photos of the Viper East Demo team, so I could do both of those, providing I buy  two of the Hasegawa CJ kits.  I also managed to get up close & personal with the T-birds jet after they did a show here last month.  Not sure I want to mess with those large decals out of the gate. Lastly, but high in the running of my personal favorite schemes on an F-16, is the retro, red tailed Tuskegee Airmen, Air Force 50th Anniversary scheme on an 302nd C model from Luke AFB.

Given the time limit is February, I can reasonably expect to be able to finish only one model buy that deadline, considering my other projects.

Kenny C, we have some things in common.  I was born & raised in NYC (Brooklyn), & went to college in Queens (College of Aeronautics, across Grand Central from the Marine Air Terminal at La Guardia).  By your tag line, I can tell you were a "Flying Umbrella" while you were at Campbell, whereas I was just down the road with "Varsity", B-7-101 AVN as a CH-47 mechanic & crew chief from '93-‘96.

I hope to finish my current project by the end of Thanksgiving weekend.  I was planning on starting a A-4 Adversary, but I think I'll start on that lone F-16 kit I have in the stash with decals for the Houston unit, since they flew the ADF version.

I will probably finish the 1:72 bird in time, but I had already
accepted that the 1:48 project wouldn't be done in time,
since I haven't hardly started it at all yet.

I say leave the deadline where it is.  Those of us who finish
late finish late, no big deal :)  I'm sure everyone will check to
see the finished work anyhow.

good work above!  cool!
