HK, the Beaufighter looks really good.  I also crown you 'Speedy 2'.  Sheesh, you build fast! Big Smile [:D]

Bear, great progress on the Voodoo!

I think I will do sort of a build log with the Mossie given all the AM I'm using.  It's going to be a challenge and I'd like to share my pain.  I'm starting with the wheel wells and will have pics up by the end of the weekend.  I hope.

Building Now:

1/48 Tamiya F4U-1A - 5%

HK, that Beaufighter is looking really nice.  I look forward to seeing it all finished up! Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Bear, the Voodoo is looking nice too.  What did you use for the metal finish on the exhaust panels?  Yes I do plan to build the Lanc for the RCAF build.  It's a two year GB so I 'should' have plenty of time!  I hope to limit my GB next year so that I can focus on a few builds I've been wanting to dolike the Lanc.  IMS3 is still on my list though.

Thanks Dave.  The metal finish is Vallejo Model Air Aluminium.  I'm starting to change over to Vallejo MA for my airbrushing, I realy like them.  I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on the Lanc, mine is stalled at the moment so maybe seeing your will give the kick i need to get her finished.

HK, IL2, and Superbear,  Good stuff! Thumbs Up [tup]  Looking really good.  Can't wait to see them finished up.

Well, it's ELCO showtime!  I finally finished up this afternoon.  Quite speedy for me.  Only 3 months!  Big Smile [:D] Here goes...

And that's the Elco.  Kenny, you expressed an interest in this model.  Gotta tell you. it was fun.  Is that because you like PT boats or now you are hooked on the BIG?  I gotta tell you, I'm hooked on BIG builds.  You work on them so long they become old friends.  So speaking of BIG, my next build for the Cold War GB is a little out of my normal stuff.  Thought I would show you all.... I mean, I could fit ALL the parts from XF-85 in my pocket! Smile [:)]

Great work everyone.  Keep posting pics.  I love to look at peoples progress pics.

Great looking Elco Paul. There seems to be a lot of progress being made right now and they all look good. Well done to everyone! Smile [:)]

I have the He162 finished.I tried to trip at the last hurdle but just managaed a bit of a stumble instead. I had a quick 30minutes the other night, inbetween coats of paint in the bathroom. In my haste I was trying to fit things incorrectlyand a few parts fell off etc etc. Serves me right for not RTFM!! Anyways here's the pics...

I used the Eduard set for this, which is mostly in the cockpit and involves some seriously small parts in places. Some I didn't attempt to fit as they were too small for me to even contemplate. The wheels are True Details and are a vast improvement over the Tamiya wheels. A pretty straightforward kit, quite small, and any problems/mistakes are allof my own doing!

I have a couple of kits to get off the bench and then it is the Kate, with even more PE!

You guys are right about the micro PE.  Sometimes I look at them small parts and just say, you gotta be kidding!  I have learned how to deal with those tiny bolt heads that fold over.  I just fold them into a 90 degree and use the part sticking up as a "handle" Glue it down then flaten the fold down.  There were a lot of tiny bits that I did not put on that loco I bult for the 07 IMS.

I tell ya... I would hate to be the pilot that attempted to bail out of that 162.  If you even thought tall that engine would suck you up.

Pressure is on Kenny.  You have to build that big beast of a gun you have.  And oh, by the way... that big gun is on my list of want to build.  I'm anxious to see how yours goes.

Hey HK, I am not finished the Stormovik yet. It is all built and sanded and prepped for paint. Havent had much time at the bench lately due to work etc. I am going to paint it it's three colour camoflage top and then I am going to attempt to do a snow  overcoat to depict it as a winter bird. I may need advice from you guy's when it comes to that part. I will try to post progress tomorrow.

RMV, that elco is amazing!Thumbs Up [tup] Love the camo!

Paul, the He162 looks excellent!Thumbs Up [tup] As far as small PE goes, you wouldn't believe the number of way-too-friggin-small-to-believe pieces that I've "missed", "overlooked", or "convienently misplaced" from the eduard set for the B-25 I'm doing for this build!Big Smile [:D] The set is huge(three frets that are each just barely smaller than an index card), and 2 of the 3 have atleast 60 seperate parts each!Sigh [sigh] I just had to put the whole build aside for the second time so I don't smash the thing out of pure frustration!Big Smile [:D]

Whoever said "war is he**" must not have ever tried PE! Laugh [(-D]

Paul that boat looks awesome. Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]  I am in awe of your talent and your ability to stay focused on the long builds.

Paul, the He 162 looks gret too Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] I love that plane but at 6'4" and 230+lbs I don't think I could ever have fit in that cockpit.  Beautiful work.

Max I'm with you on the Pe thing.  I don't mind a little bit to spruce things up but when there is a lot I have to take a break for awhile and let it rest or something is going to break. Dead [xx(]

Paul, fantastic work on the -162!  Interesting paint scheme, nice job on the AM adds, and a golf clap for not dropping it at the end this time. Big Smile [:D]

As promised, some pics for the ole build log.  I'm actually following the instructions Shock [:O] as it will help me keep track of where the heck I am on this project.  And those instructions have me starting on the engine nacelles and wheel wells.

I'm using the Aries wheel wells to add some needed detail to the nice but lackluster kit wells.  I've taped the nacelles together to figure out what needs to be done.

For the forward portion of the well, I need to remove this tab from both sides.

Then I can begin the inevitable sanding and cursing to get the Aries forward and rear inserts to fit.  Rinse, lather and repeat for the other side.  The Aires instructions leave much to be desired, but the well instructions are much better than the bomb bay instructions.  Dead [xx(] But we'll get to that later.

That's as far as I got this weekend.  I pushed to finish the build for the War in the Desert GB and was successful, so I'll now be able to focus on this project.

I have the Mosquito In Action books plus as much as I could glean from the web, but I also ordered the Mosquito Walk-Around book to help fill in the gaps of what I don't know.  Which is nearly everything. Big Smile [:D]

Cheers!

Final installment of the Tamiya 1/48 Beaufighter. I used to think it was an ugly airplane but as time goes on I think it's rather neat looking.

The kit went together rather well and was enjoyable. The only part that gave me a tussle was the canopy, as it was a bit wide for the fuse. A couple of clamps, some CA and a overnight wait put it in place more or less like I wanted. It'll do.

The interior is basic and I left it that way. Not much seen and my main goal was to have an example of the prototype in my display case. I added misc belts I had around since they are highly visible.

The invasion stripes are painted, I loathe invasion stripe decals. Besides, the rice paper was missing from mine and they stuck to the bottom of the box and are ruined. One of the serials shows the same damage but it's hard to see in the photos.

Paint is MM enamels and Tamiya acryls. I had to mix my own "sky" for the underside because I didn't have any. I think it turned out ok, a mix of XF19 and XF73. MIG oils did the panel lines and various grunge and leaks that radials tend to exhibit. Hmmm. Did brit radials leak like US made ones?

The recess where the landing lights (?) go was just screaming "MV lens". How could I not agree? Engines are very basic but well molded. I painted and dry brushed them and tucked them into place in the nacelles. The cowls stayed off the airframe until all the painting was done.

The copper color was originally way to bright for my taste so I tried to tone it down with some MM metalizer exhaust. After that I masked for the airframe color. When the mask came off I was left with what you see now. An accident to be sure and probably not accurate but I liked the look of it regardless so I left it. Only a flat coat of Polyscale covers it.

Normally I don't arm my a/c unless the armament is a major factor in the identity of the subject but this time I decided the kit just looked better with the torpedo. I painted it according to the instructions but added gray fins and nose to break up the boring looking black. The instructions called for the rocket rails but no rockets.Shock [:O] That required the molded on rockets to be removed.

Neat kit, everyone should have one. This one will help break up the recent wave of US stuff I've built and look good in the case. Thanks go to Kenny for putting on the build and IL2 for the work he put in the very smooth running voting system. Comments are always welcome.

Thanks for the kind words, guys!

Raptor driver, the back sweep is just blue paper from a local art supply store. It lives on a roll over my bench and when I need it I clear the desk, pull it down and whip out the lights. Instant photo booth.
