ruddratt, give the 1/35 range a try!  If you've built any of their new 1/72 Armor Pro series, its the same thing in regards to detail and quality!  DML may get a lot of flak on certain things (especially minute accuracy), but I've had nothing to complain about with their new releases.

I'm planning on doing just that, Ernest! Thumbs Up [tup] Been thinking about taking a crack at their 1/35 88mm flak gun.....looks like an awesome kit!

....and great work on your Panzer IV! Wow, that thing looks better & better every time I see it!! Gotta ask how you did the zim. It looks fantastic! Thumbs Up [tup]

Didn't think I saw that at my LHS, but would dark yellow do?

dupes, I'm talking about the ANCIENT Tamiya Panzer IV Ausf H...the one with the motorization holes.  Its an easy kit to build but the detail isn't anywhere close to the new DML releases and the fit can be horrible at times!

Ernest, very nice progress so far! That really is a sweet-looking kit. I've build a few of their 1/72's, but nothing from them as of yet in 1/35. May just have to try one! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good progress!

I wasn't planning on posting these, but since dupes asked  Whistling [:-^]

This is what I managed to do this weekend on my Dragon PzKpfw IV Ausf. G "Kharkov".  The detail is incredible compared to my old Tamiya Ausf. H!  Fit & finish was fantastic!  This is my first DML Smart Kit and I am impressed.

If I remember correctly FM, middlestone is the name for that color as manufactured by the paint company DML references in their instructions - I think it's Gunze Sangyo? They just mean to use good ol' dunkelgelb.

Oh, and "OOB" is Out Of Box, as in no aftermarket goodies. Wink [;)]

Thanks for clearing that up dupes, I'll be going my LHS tommorrow to pick up paint needed for this King.

Larry, the M8 looks pretty good to me!  I'm not sure what you mean by "too extreme" on the T-70...looks like a vehicle whose whitewash is almost completely faded or worn off. What method did you use for both?

Thanks a lot bufflehead. I was thinking the T-70 looked too decayed. I appreciate your perspective and feedback.  Maybe it looks ok for a vehicle in the late stages of fading.  I gave a extremely brief explanation of the technique in response to Dupes below.  Let me know if you'd like me to expand on it some more.

Ruddratt - we've always got room for more! Same goes for you as well, Feldmarschall Model. Consider both of yourselves offically added. Wink [;)]

This is starting to turn into a big one...anyone have any WIP pics of their kits yet? Yeah!! [yeah]

I've got a fairly boring one...got a bunch of mindless wheel and suspension stuff done while watching football this weekend - but now I get to start in on the fun stuff. Mischief [:-,]

Plastic_Cross - Yeah when I was looking throw what they had, and found this and saw the discount price I was going to get it.  I also found a Panther early production Tamiya kit, which was 21 dollors.  I hope this second King Tiger bulid will turn out better, than my first one did.  So far the parts fit very nicely, have had no problems yet.  And what is OOB, Im lost?

And another thing, one of main coat colors is Middel stone, which looks very close to dark yellow.  Who sells this kinda paint? I haven't been able to find it.

Thanks

Larry - did you use 2 different methods on each of these? Or did you just "tone down" the effect on the second one?

Seems to me that most of the time the numbers/markings are either excluded from the whitewashing (leaving a small border of the original color around the marking) or repainted on top of the whitewash, rather than covered up.

I was wondering about how to do the markings - pre or after whitewash.  I was following what I read in the "Modelling the IS Heavy Tank" book by Nicola Cortese...and excellent book by the way.  He shows how to create a weathered worn white wash look by (1) applying base color, then (2) whitewash, then (3) apply more base color using a cosmetic sponge.  Iterate on steps 2 and 3 until the desire results are obtained.

I used the same technique for the M8 and the T-70.  I performed 3 iterations on the M8, and only 2 on the T-70.  So consequently, the more iterations, the more refined and subtle the results.  I also used different colors on the sponge step for the T-70, while stayed with straight Tamiya OD for the M8.

That's exactly how I got mine last year - clearance at Hobby Lobby.  You won't be disappointed with this kit.  The fit is essentially perfect, and with the extras included in the box, an OOB build will look very good.

bbrowniii, I built the tamiya 222 a while ago (my third build) In the whitewash scheme. I used tamiya weathering sets (which are really the same thing as pastels or pigments) to get the right effect.

There's more pics in the original thread:

/forums/665191/ShowPost.aspx

It was an easy, fun kit to build. No fit problems whatsoever. It even comes with PE grenade screens, which really looks great.

*I went back and checked the pictures of the 103c tank in winter camo, but Im not sure ill be able to get those hard demarcation lines on the camo with silly putty. Do you think tape will work? It might be a pain to do, but itll give me harder edges.

Dupes, this looks like it would be a fun build. Ya got room for one more? I've got a 1/48 Accurate Miniatures Yak-1 w/skis that is desperately seeking targets. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Working on my M7 Priest....so far, so good.  I spent some time last month experimenting with winter weathering in preparation for this GB.  I built the old Tamiya M8 and the Toga T-70 AFVs specifically for this purpose.  Here's a couple of photos of the results.  I think the T-70 is a little too "well done" as the finish turned out a little more extreme than I had intended.  It would be easy to redo the worn whitewash finish with a little more finesse, and I may do that someday.  Thanks - Larry

Cool pics.

Second to last one (the late tiger) isn't whitewashed...that's a pic of a sSSPzAbt 101 vehicle in Normandy.

And, of course, the rest are all early models....Sigh [sigh]

The bags are marked with different part numbers, so yeah, that idea.

You have but to ask Sir Dupes!

Didn't get a chance to start it today.Sad [:(]  Had to work Angry [:(!]

I'm thinking of getting a commander figure for this kit.  Anyone have any suggestions for a good winter clad Panzer commander?

I see that the magic track bags contain different color track....are Panzer IV tracks left and right handed?

Just roll out the silly putty and the cut it before you put it on. That way the lines will be straight, like they're supposed to.

From that finished pic Hermes posted on the first page, I'd say that camo job is an ideal candidate for the silly putty method...looks like you'd need about 3 eggs worth. Wink [;)]
