Oops, didn't even realize that.  I should've looked closer at the first page.  The Corsair is going off to the side for a couple of weeks.  I have a 'stang with dive brakes to work on.

First off,

Awesome pic and info James. It's so cool to have some one from that era around to talk to. I have similar experiences with my grandad on my mom's side. He is a retired Merchant Marine and his ship was torpedoed out from under him in the Indian Ocean during WWII. 13 days in a life raft. I'm the only grandson who has joined the Navy so him and I have lots of heart to heart talks about life at sea. I mention things he has told me to others in my family and they are like "Really, he never mentioned that to us."  It's a very special relationship and I admire you for it.

Ok, now that that is out of the way. My Eduard PE Zoom cockpit set arrived in the mail yesterday. The 'Pit is off the sprues and all painted up with interior green. I have never worked with PE before so I'll take it slow. Thank God for Swanny's tutorial. I will prolly keep that on a continous loop during my build and sludge washing of the Office.

Ok, enough rambling, happy modeling everyone and hope the winter weather is fading for you like it is for me. 'Tis the season. I'm firing up the Smoker tomorrow(food smoker for you hippiesWink [;)]. MMMMM, Smoked Ribs.

Regards,

Jeff

Hi Fred,

I'm a little new here, but not new to modeling.

I'd like to add my name to the list and model a Tamiya 1/72 F4U-1A Corsair.

In the memory of my dad, I'd like to do this paint scheme.

(dad is pictured here flying his Navy issue Corsair over Orange County. November, 1953)

Thanks!

James, I hate to break it to you, but that's a F4U-4B. I'm not sure who made in 72 scale, I think Academy may have did one, I know they did in 48th scale as well as Hasagawa.

But that is so cool you're building your dads plane. Bravo.

Take this plastic and model it!

Just a question. Is this a F4U group build like the Logo says or is it a general Corsair GB. i understand that obviously i can't build-up an A-7 Corsair II, but what about an F2G?????

Hey NPS, since the F2G was based on the F4U-1, I say why the heck not.  It's essentially the same bird.

Count me in for a Special Hobby 1/72 F2G-1/2 Super Corsair. Markings are still unknown, but i might do a fictional Soccer War Super Corsair, complete with wing-mounted 5" Rockets

Well all, finally got a chance to open my Rev 1/32. Its pritty basic, but I think I can make it BADD A**. Noticed one thing though. The tail seems to be warped to one side, not much but noticable. Any ideas for straightning it up? I`ll be using the LONESTAR pit set with wheelwell set & wheels. Oh yea the flap set of course!! Also I have the EDUARDS detail set. I think most of it wont be used. Maybe some levers for the pit and most of the exterior stuff. Still havent decided on a -1A or -1D. I would like to put duel belly tanks on though. I know, I know, it hasn`t started yet and we have a whole year, but like most I`m ittchin to get started. Glad to see we have a few more joinning! Welcome aboard!!........Harv

Hey Harv,

To straighten out the tail, you can either slowly heat it up with a hair dryer or under hot water.  Once it's softened up, you can straighten it out, either by hand or between two flat surfaces.

If you do it by hand, once you're happy with the position, hold it under cold running water for a minute or so, so it sets in place.  If the warp is still present, reheat it and rebend it.  Sometimes it takes right away, sometimes, it takes a few attempts.

Philo, I remember seeing your build. I was very impressed with it! Especialy since it was a "toy" model. C21 has proved their models can be built into very nice models. You did just that!! ...........Harv

is it OK if I'm almost done? I've got my Tamiya 48th -1D that I converted to a -1C. All I need to do is weathering and final assembly, but I'd still like to join.

-Josh

Current Builds: If I were to list everything I have in progress, it'd take way too long! Some notable inclusions:

Hasegawa 1:48 KI-84

Tamiya 1:48 P-51D (in Iwo Jima long-range escort markings)

4 (yes, four) Tamiya 1:48 F4U-1s (1x -1D, 1x -1A, and 2x -1s)

Not that it's my call, but i say maybe. it's not like this is a race to see who can build one the fastest AND look the best, but it is still before the official start date so........... it's up to the bossman, unless we can overturn his ruling with a unanimous vote. Philo, that thing looks awesome, i never would have guessed that it was a "toy", pretty impressive, especially for less than $10.

As for mine i finalized my idea of a Soccer War Super Corsair, i think i'll try to mod-in 2 pairs of 20mm hispano cannons in addition to the rockets. i know someone will say they never used hispano 20mm's, but think about it.... they didn't use super corsairs in the soccer war either (as far as i know) so what the heck i'll try it. i'll probably add a pair of 500 lb bombs to the loadout as well just to give the "corncob" a workout.

Hey Jaypack,

This is a really tough call.  The idea behind a group build is that we all start together and work through things and share tips, tricks and exchange ideas.  You'll be finished before we even start.

I'll leave it up to the rest of the group and let the majority vote.

So, what say you, members of the official F4U Corsair group build - yay or nay?

I say it depends on how far along. My feeling is whatever the group feels is right. I hate to not let someone in. As for me I havent started a thing yet. Other than ordering stuff and looking at the parts ( itch, itch, itch). But I CAN wait( but not for too long) OH did I say that out loud?....................Harv

If it was I ~ I would go ahead and pick up another Corsair and build along with the others possibly picking up something new to add I had not thought of.  Besides you can never have too many Corsairs.  Whistling [:-^]  Having one almost complete is really not worth participating in a Group Build IMO.   But I also agree with Harv I would not want to Not Let Someone In..

I say let him in, he's a certified Corsair Nut and a pretty good fellow,  But we will have to beat hin up pretty good on his finish work.  The second corsair is a good idea.

Well, here's my logical thinking; I'm not looking to keep anyone out, the more the merrier.  But, the idea of the group build is to build alongside other members to share tips and ideas.  It's more than just people who like corsairs, it's about sharing the commonality of the build, to build alongside other members - a virtual workshop, if you will.

If you're 99% complete before we start and most likely will be completely finished before the rest of the group starts, you're missing the key component of being in a group build - building with the group.  Now if he were to pick up a second corsair to build along with us, I'd put him on the list, no questions asked.  But as it stands, neither he nor the members of the GB really stand to benefit.  He gets a badge without actually participating in the build itself, and he doesn't really learn any building tips from us, nor us from him.

It's like walking along the road and a marathon comes up behind you when you're 10 feet from the finish line.  Do you share in the celebratory process the same as the people who ran the 26 miles or share their comraderie?

I'm just concerned that the meaning of the GB badge will lose all meaning if we just hand it out to people who just happen to claim that they like the subject we're modeling without actually participating in the build.

But like I've said, I'll leave it up to the majority of the GB.  I'll give it till the end of the week so more members get a chance to weigh in.

Though, this does pose an interesting area of debate.  I may pose this question in the aircraft forum, just to see what the current thinking on this is.

A question regarding Tamiya paint callouts on my Tamiya 1:48 F4U-1D Kit:

Most callouts are like this: X-18

On step 1 (cockpit assembly), Part A16 has a callout like this:  XF-3:2+ and right under this callout is:                                                                  XF-5:1

Is this an"either or" paint mix to use, or, does it mean to mix each ratio and then combine them to achieve the final paint color for the part?  Thanks.

Hey Joe,

It means to use 2 parts of XF-3 to 1 part of XF-5 or more simply, twice as much XF-3 as XF-5
