The Official F4U Corsair Group Build 4/01/08 - rolling end date

Looking forward to the GB..I am acutally going to purchase my corsair on the official start date but need to update you.. I will still be modeling the "Black Sheep Squadron" but put me down for a Tamiya F4U-1A.

Regarding the chap that is requesting to come in, but is 98% done...Hate to be the party pooper here, but my vote is 'Nay'....like Gig typed...the idea is to do all, or most of the work during the time allotted. If it was say...he had only the 'Pit done, and maybe the Power plant done, (granted those are the 2 areas that will take me the longest & give me the most fits), but to just do all the tiddying up right when it kicks off...nah...there was another earlier in the thread that posted his 21stC build, but it's not the entry. My Humble recomendation, is to get another & enter that. Another COA is post what in a pic wht you hvae...then the more experienced on here can better evaluate how far along it is, then make the call...(Never buy a car unseen).

(either way the vote goes, I would still love to see the 'in work' & the finished product in question)

But is the applicant truly feels that he has 2% to go, then Wammo! He's done...then no, pick up another Bent wing bird & hit the bricks runnin' when the rest of us do.

Speaking for myself only, I have 3 in the works for 2 other GBs now. Once those are wrapped up then I can dig into this one. (It's a Trump, so l;ots of fiddly bits, gonna need all the time I can get.)

In the interest of full disclosure, my PE parts arrived on Friday the 14th and I painted all of the Office interior green parts over the weekend. To be honest, i didn't pay enough attention to the start date. I signed up for the Big Cats GB around the same time and for some reason, I thought our start date was March 15th.

So, long story short, the 'pit is done but I'm gonna put her on the shelf for a week or 2. I need a break anyway. I used the Eduard Zoom set and frankly, working with parts that are roughly the size of a human hair is nerve wracking for me. It's my first time ever working with PE and I learned some important lessons like, "not every PE piece neccesaraly makes the kit look better." I have seen others say the same thing on here in different threads but, I guess I had to learn the hard way...

I'll post pics of my progress in the next few days. But for the time being I have a 1/48 P-51B and a BF-109 Trop already put together and just waiting for exterior paint.

Hi guys I have a quick question for you, is there a cut-off date for joining this build?

I am keen to join but it won't be for a few months yet as I have other GB commitments that I want to finish first.

James, I hate to break it to you, but that's a F4U-4B. I'm not sure who made in 72 scale, I think Academy may have did one, I know they did in 48th scale as well as Hasagawa. But that is so cool you're building your dads plane. Bravo.

  Looking at the pic a bit closer reveals this to be a vanilla F4U-4. The F4U-4B had four 20mm cannons and this one definatly has the six .50's which makes it a F4U-4. I am a bit envious of your choice of subject and its personal significance.

James absolutely outstanding source of subject matter by the way, I'm sure you'll do your dad's bird justice .

As for the F4U-4 the only options you have in 1/72 are the Matchbox/Revell kit , the Italeri kit , or the Hobby Boss kit which is a little light on cockpit detail but otherwise is a nice kit.

In 1/48 you have there is no F4U-4 kit (go figure) but the only real difference between the dash 4 and the dash 4B is the dropping of the 6 x 50 cals in favour of 4 x 20mm cannons.  The Hasegawa F4U-4B is ok but a little sparse on cockpit detail and has raised panel lines.  Your best bet in this scale is the Academy kit and do a little scratch building in the machine gun dept.

Don't worry about it, Jeff.  You're still far enough from being anywhere near done that it won't affect anything.  I say as long as you can hold off on the rest until the start date, everything is A-OK.

Darren, the only cutoff is the amount of time you'd need to build it by the end date.  Say you think it will take 2 months to build, then the cutoff date would be 2 months prior to April 1st, 2009.

 Thanks for the suggestions. I have a 1/72 Tamiya and Italeri kits coming to me in a few days.

I'll take a look at them and decide if I want to jump up to 1/48th. ( I am limited in the space department)

The Hasagawa has raised panel lines! Might not stop me. Heck, I may even consider 1/32.

Hey Harv,

I don't know much about getting the RTV mold out of the piece as casting really isn't my bag.  I'm sure you can look up 'dissolving RTV rubber' on google or something and find something.

As far as the air bubbles go, if they're small, use CA to fill them.  Just be sure to sand them after they've dried, but before they've cured.

My 1/48 Revell Corsair is F4U-4 (#85-5248); never built it up nor even opened the box, cant tell you anything about quality. If you still need a F4U-4 to build up in your Dad's markings, you are welcome to mine.

Funny thing happens when you order from Lucky Models, you tend to forget sometimes stuff is coming... I got a box with an armor kit and the 1/48 Academy F4U-1 BirdCage I ordered 5 months ago :). Any comments on this kit?

Please include me in this GB. I'm planning to do the Special Hobby 1/48 F2G Super Corsair done in the Sohio #57 trim, something a bit different from all that blue!

As I think about it, I might just do a 1/32nd, since I'll be displaying it with the photo etc...

And, it will save my eyeballs.

What kit do you suggest?

Hey, it's OK if you don't think I should be in it, It doesn't matter all that much to me. I'll respect your opinion, and so I'll retract my requet for now. However, I like the idea of a second corsair-I'm thinking about getting another -1D and building an RN Corsair IV. If that happens, I'll definitely be in...

Just taking a stab in the dark here...(get out of the way!!!!)  but here's my guess...

RN Corsair IV---RN, Royal Navy....Corsair..Um Duh. ....IV...it has a needle in a hydraulic line...no really...MkIV, (Roman numeral 4). ....but that is purely speculation, from an uneducated person...

sorry, I should have elaborated- I meant a Royal Navy Corsair Mk. IV (basically a -1D with clipped wingtips to fit in the Brits' hangar decks).

Anywho, If I can get the money together, (I'm kinda broke right now...) I'll order a kit first chance I get!

Finally got a chance to do some typing.(some comments)

1.James your 1/72nd X15 very very cool (I love the X15)

2.Re the guy with the 98% finished kit...Let him finish BUT he can only work on it if he's drunk 12 VBs (a great beer from Australia this should equalize things)

3. This is my plan  complete (A) RNZAF P40,(B)Build 1/72nd Fokker triplane to put with my Richthofen Bust,(C)F86 as Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrins mount  (D)Corsair... plus various figures I'm a figure painter after all

I'm working on the theory of a steep learning curve as the P40 will ber my first aircraft in 20+ years have done figures and 1 X15 I figure I can stagger the builds
