I took a few photos of a Corsair last week at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, WI.  If anyone needs any close-ups of the engine, L/G or wingfold area, I'd be happy to share them! Big Smile [:D]

Drew- Great info!  CAn't wait to show you what I am planning for my drop-tanks, very cool indeed! Thumbs Up [tup]

kenjitak - Thanks for the pics!

James - 1/32 probably better for display purposes and detailing... dont know anything about what 1/32 Corsair kit is better. There are some reviews on Large Scale Planes, including one for a F4U-4

Jaypack,  The GB lasts a year - I say save up a bit, get the RN corsair and we'd be more than honored to have you build along side us.  I didn't mean to pick on you, per se, in that other thread, it was just a convenient example for something that I found to be an interesting area of debate.  And as you can see, there are definite varing opinions.

Ken, great pictures, buddy Thumbs Up [tup]

I don't know.  Maybe he decided to put aside his Corsair project to work on something else.

Ken, Great Corsair Pics.  Do you have anymore of the last one (-5/-5N)?

Hi Chris ,

Here are a few more of the -5. BTW, the planes at the Lone Star Flight Museum are all working, flying aircraft! While I was out there taking pics their B-17G took off, flew around the field a few times and then landed and taxied right up to where we were standing! Nothing like the smell and the tink-tink sound of 4 hot radials cooling down!

OK guys, here we go-

Mark, looking at the pic (perfect btw) it show several things that ALL instructions don't. first, look at the dark blue demarcation line of the tri-color. It flows straight across the length of the fuselage. It does not bend and extend downwards like the technical orders show. Instructions tell you to follow the tech order, but in most cases that is not how they were painted.

Next was that fighters (not on an attack mission) did not or rarely carry drop tanks. It looks like they are being scrambled by the postures of the pilots, not leisurely walking out to their planes. Notice flaps up (I always put mine down - just for the look Big Smile [:D] screw accuracy) cowl flaps open and controls mostly neutral (rudder exception). That was due to a control lock in the cockpit that locked the stick in the neutral position. It is standard procedure to do that after shutting down on most every aircraft.

As for the dio Mark - sounds great and I can't wait to see it!

Hi guys,

All this time and I didn't notice the dedicated GB forum!

I have over a dozen Corsairs in my stash, I'd love to come aboard. Off the top of my head:

1:48 Hobbycraft 1968 COIN bird cammo

1:48 Academy 1952 Marine training unit

And anything else that jumps onto my workbench of its own accord!

Corsairophile AND Mustangaholic,

TB379

The old Revell Monogram 1/48 kit is a cross between the F4U-1 and F4U-4, sort of the same thing as their old 1/48 Wildcat.  Fun kits but not accurate if that is important to you.  I think the best F4U-4 is the Hasegawa 1/48 kit, in 1/32 the Trumpeter kit is about it.  It's not bad except for the gap tooth look of the cowl flaps and the difficult outer wing fit.  To my knowledge so far there are no good 1/72 F4U4 kits.  The Italeri kits have fuselage length problems.  All that said, you can build about any Corsair and have fun, they all look like bent wing birds and will not be confused with any other airplane.

Drew,

Thanks for the insight on the pic.  Never knew some of the things you pointed out.  Makes me want to be as accurate as possible.

Fred, I need to change my kit for this GB from the old Monogram to the far newer Tamiya F4U-1D release.

Mark - my pleasure. Glad to help you out in that regard. Of note too is the national insignea, has the red outline. That dated the pic to early '43.

I will throw out something that I have found out about early Corsairs. Some -1A's were delivered in blue gray/light gray. During field re-paint to tri-color  scheme, the original paint was not stripped off. The maintnece personel often (likely all did) just painted the upper dark sea blue over the original blue gray. Instead of painting intermediate blue over the blue gray, it was often just left until the aircraft was sent to the rear areas for major maintenance and was properly re-painted there.

I have plans to paint a kit like this, and i am ready for the barrage of "it ain't right" comments tooWink [;)]

Cheers

Drew,

SOunds like a very interesting scheme indeed!  I really seeing schemes not often seen.  I ran across a profile the other day of a British Corsair I, a little different than the II's and IV's you usually see. Thumbs Up [tup]

Darren,

Alright! We have 2 USMC Night Fightin' -5N Corsairs.  I've been told that my Monogram F4U-5N is a rebox of the Hasegawa kit.  It's likely that the two of us have the same plastic parts.  Let me know where you have trouble and vice versa, we can help each other out.

Here is a pic of what I think you were talking about in ref to the paint.

Thunderbolt,

Just let me know which kit(s) you plan on building for this GB and I'll add you to the list.

Ok gang, just a little more than a week to go.  With all the activity I've seen prior to this point, I expect to see lots of progress pics and idea swapping once we start Wink [;)]

yeah i can't wait either. i'm waiting for my F2G to show up from squadron, once it's here i'll start all the painting and hopefully i won't have to wait too long for my 20mm cannons to show up from them either. i know it will look a little goofy with quad 20's, but i think it's nice to have a few "what-if" models in the display case.
