I just can't seem to get the Hubcap's off .....

Good one!

That is from 2001 Space Odyssey I think. Speaking of that movie: Turner Classic Movies is running it this Friday. Also in that lineup is Forbidden Planet, and From Earth to the Moon, amongst others.

I just came up from the dungeon. I am hitting a low point in this build. The deeper I get into this kit the more I find wrong. The amount of work to fix this kit is daunting. The potholes and such I can deal with. The bigger issue is the lower clam shell that contains the office structures. That thing is really hosed. If I mount it the way it is designed to fit, the cabin sits at an angle in relation to the Windows. The Windows are part of the top piece. I have spent hours cutting here, sanding there, and nothing changes it. I suspect that one of the pieces is warped. The only way I can figure fixing it is to add a shim to one side of where the two shells meet. Doing this throws everything else out of alignment, creating even larger gaps than what I have now. If I go that route it will require massive bodywork. Either way it will, but the latter will be much worse. Sigh. Who's idea was it to build this thing? Oh yeah, it was mine. Dang it.

I will probably add the shim. It's going to be a project either way. So, I might as well suck it up and do it right.

Add some Pics of the Alignment problem.  I trolled the Web for some mention of aligment issues on any resin kits of the POTA ship but came up pretty empty although maybe I don't understand the issue.  I gather if you add a shim the inside floor to ceiling height will change on one side.  Hey, if it's only .020" just don't remind us, we won't notice.

How far are you into planning the four "sleeping" chambers?  It would seem to be quite a bit of resin removal.

Add some Pics of the Alignment problem.

Funny you should say that. I was planning on it. Indifferent

Nino
I trolled the Web for some mention of aligment issues on any resin kits of the POTA ship but came up pretty empty

This may be a new problem to the updated mold. With the first kit the clam shells seemed to sit very well. With this second kit, they didn't from the get go. I can't speak to the interior cabin issue because I didn't get that far with it.

Nino

It does affect the height some but not enough that I am too concerned... I think. It appears that most of that will be hidden. Just when I say that, I'll find out different. The bigger issue thus far is the exterior. Adding a shim creates a gap where by you have to fill and shape it to the lines of the ship. You will get a clearer picture of it when I post it. I am going to warn you now. That bottom fit looks ugly as sin.

Nino

Not far at all. I have too much other work to do before I tackle that. I need to get the fit right better before I start mapping out the interior. Even then--I want the cosmetics of the exterior fixed. Then I will move to the windows. Kind of start with the windows and move back.

You bet. A lot of resin will go.

I wrote MIM about some of these issues that I am seeing. The CS rep advised the owner. I am interested to hear what their throughts are, if any.

Either way--I plan on moving forward with this.

I feel your "pain".

I went through this with the Glenco kit of the USS Oregon.

Basicly The Oregon became a pile of part's that I used as pattern's to scratchbuild new part's ..... then I threw the whole mess into a box. I havent seen it since 2008. The thought of all that scratch-bashing is overwelming.

You are about to do the same thing here, Keep a stiff upper lip and dive in. ( I know .... I'm a fine one for giving advice I wont follow myself. ) I have been on the fence about buying the Icarus kit myself. just bought some scenic supply's last week. I was going to wait and see how / what you were going to do with the display and see if I could do the same thing.

( Just what I need ,.... yet another half-baked kit in my trunk of doom. )

I have a feeling that "Plastistruct" and "Evergreen" are going to be your new best freind's .... I know them very well.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Yup, you know it. If not for this W.I.P, I may have already tossed it. There is a line that a person crosses where you know, it's just not worth it. Take heart... I am not anywhere near that line. I am a stubborn S**. This mission must continue. There is a planet inhabited by mute humans depending on us. And-- Nova is waiting for me. Confused

Also a yup. Wait and see is good thinking. If you are not in the mood to fight--skip it.

For sure. The sleep chambers will be made from it. And probably much more.

Okay. I have some picture to load. Stay tuned.

Ok...here we go.

Below: Do you see how it slopes up at the right?

Below: With a shim added. This was a crude mockup using a wooden stick. It could use a little more to it, but it is fairly close.

Below: Here you can see what I'd have to repair.

Below: Check out the wart on the nose of my ship. A hundred bucks says there are gaping holes underneath that. Btw. I am holding off sanding that until just before paint. I want to keep as much material on there as possible. With all the work being doing on this, I want to minimize the chances of busting it off. I have already banged it against things more than once. Chance are I will accidently break it off long before paint. We'll see.

And there it is. Much work to do.

Check out the wart on the nose of my ship. A hundred bucks says there are gaping holes underneath that.

And , if I'm seeing it right, a hairline crack. Be careful, the nose will probably want to fall off as you sand.

It's a trick! Zaius is trying to lure me in. Have you forgotten the sixth scroll that he often quotes? Yeah me too. So I looked it up.

“Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.”

And yes. Very possibly. I might have to fashion a new nose too.

Calling GMorrison.

This is my first resin kit. That being the case... I don't have a good reference. Are these issues within the range of what one can expect of resin models? Or do you think I got a stinker? I'd like to get your opinion. If you don't have one, that is fine too.

Thanks Bill.

Gee whiz, that's going to be a load of work! I've built a few badly cast resin kits but never anything with an interior. Without it you can sorta just putty/Bondo the outside, sand the crap outta it and move on. Getting in there to work on the interior and not sanding all the detail away is going to be rough job. Good luck, wish I had some useful advice. Tongue Tied

As Dr Smith would say, "Indeed."

Good luck, wish I had some useful advice.

That's okay my friend. I dug my grave. Er um, hole. Now I have to climb out of it.

Maybe the best solution would be to set it on fence post, grab a rifle, and put a bullet through it. Like an asteroid shattering it in a million pieces. Tell you the truth--I would get GREAT JOY in seeing that. Problem is... I don't have a fence post, nor a rifle. But I bet some of you do. Hehe. It would be a fitting end to the ill fated Bakster Icarus Expedition.

Ka-BOOM!

Ah well. Until a better solution arrives, I will trudge on.

Laughing.

Indeed.

Bakters sixth scroll, verse two:

'Beware the beast Icarus, the grand seductress. She entices man with her shapely form, sweet tidings consume by way of gentle voice. Behold! Her true nature revealed. Changing form before man, devouring the innocent. Yea, her contempt is without reason, her vengeance without cause. Shun her. Drive her back into her resin lair, for she is the deliverer of destruction.'

Personally? I think I'd just finish the outside and detail what interior you see though the windows and call it good enough. Embarrassed

Yeah buddy. I am hearing what you are saying. In other words, don't waste your time on this. I am leaning that way too. However, my time is too valuable to me to do it half way. It's all or nothing. Kind of how I am wired too.

I sent images of the problems to MIM. I was advised that the owner is in contact with the mold manufacturer for review. It sounds like they are looking for a solution. I'd love it if they'd send me a new one with the issues fixed. That would be the best case scenario. I am not holding my breath. I think the mold is bad. Just my opinion.

Until I hear more about what they are going to do-- my work on this is suspended. What a bummer.

I have noticed, over the many, many years I have noticed such things, that almost all of the mute, single, womoen in does skin have all ridden off away behind Chuck Heston bareback on a horse.

I count myself quite fortunate that my Shreeveport sweetie is not mute--would make for boring phone calls.  I'm not asking about deerskins or riding horses bareback, as I prefer my block not knocked off.

Somewhat distracted as 2010 is playing on TCM right now, and Helen Mirren is being a very convincing cosmonaut.

A "suggestion" , for what it's worth, I recommend working on the Interior.  You can make the Exterior fit around it later.

Tim, I swear. You and I are functioning on the same APE frequency. I just got back from a walk and I had decided to continue. I was even thinking I should focus on the interior.

I am miserable if I am not racking my brain on how to do this, or how to do that. I think that I have a new problem to contend with. I am not only a recovering apes junkie, now I am a model junkie. Add it to my list of maladies.

Btw. It is a beautiful night here in Milwaukee. The hot temps moved out, and there is an excellent star lit sky. Somewhere out there is Ape Planet. Icarus speeds towards her at light-speed. Too slow for the distance being traveled. But, it's what we have. And that's that.
