One reason I flipped the bridge around was to make the head look like that of an Oviraptor, a weird-looking dinosaur with a large crest on its head. For this reason I put the highest element toward the front.

I like them turned around like that but I've always been a little backwards.Propeller [8-]

Yeah, the D-6 is a very interesting ship. I'm glad we have a couple Klingon projects going.

OK.

Now that I have stared at Masao's blueprints (enlarged to scale, of course) for hours and slept on the idea a few days,
the backwards bridge is growing on me.

As one of the most forward parts of the ship, it is very arrogant and in-your-face!
Very Klingon. "nuqneH? tlhIngan maH!" Grumpy [|(]

How much can I tinker with the design before it isn't Starfleet Museum material?
I mean, there is quite a bit of difference between the blueprints and some of the CG renderings aalready.

How about if I made the bridge even more like the crest of an oviraptor?
Sort of a fat blade/teardrop shape that tapers as it goes aft?
Not as fat as the command bulge of the 1701. More blade-like than that.
I would definitely leave it wide enough for a Klingon bridge and its armor.
In fact, the profile would stay much the same as in Masao's blueprints.

One Klingonism that I have added already is to move the warp nacelles inboard until they are covered by the ship's wings.
Like Lou Ferrigno curling his arms in that great Hulk pose. The engines are more protected.
And there is still that menacing shape...

There's an email FSM newsletter?

Modelnut: Go for it. I'm sure that many ships are modified in the field, either to upgrade the equipment or to decorate them in some way.

Looking at the head again, I remember that I also tried to make the brim of the hat sort of spiky, again, like a a dinosaur. Some field commanders might attach extra decorations to increase the resemblance.

I have started a Destroyer circa the 1975 star fleet technical manual. It's a Saladin class Destroyer, and I'd like to enter it, even though it really doesn't fit within your rules. Would it be o.k. for me to enter this? Otherwise I'll just send it to ARC. Personally, I think it should be included as the original Star Fleet tech manual really is *THE* original source for many of us "trekkies" from way back. (Those of us who remember TOS when it *WAS* The Original Series, pre re-runs!

Cheers,
Mark

I'm still grinding away on the Torsk and the Chowder. I've been picking out decals for the Torsk as I start painting. All of the miscellaneous blisters on the hull and drive section of the Chowder are in place, and I'm whittling the wings out of renshape, which truly is wonderous stuff! First time I've used it and I'm a fan. Those odd lottle warp pods are still troubling me- I have some cut down from plastic spoons that look OK, but I'm still leaning to carving a master and vacuforming. Any suggestions?

Hi Mark, This group build only has one rule and that is that your project must be from "The Starfleet Museum" website. Why don't you start a "Starfleet Technical Manual" group build here at FSM? Sounds like fun to me.Wink [;)] If not I hope you post your build and finished model pics in FSM's forum, I'm sure everyone would love to see them.

My Klingon D6 is coming along. No pictures yet. Sad [:(]

I have the engines at 75%. The main hull is about the same.

The backwards bug must have bit me too, Woody!
I started this build from the uttermost aft! Propeller [8-]

Thought I had a crisis Saturday. I started comparing what I had built to some of the images and got a little insecure. I am building from aft forward and bottom up. But some of the art looks to be best built from the top down!

I mean, this is my second shot at the main hull. I would be very unhappy making a third attempt! Banged Head [banghead]

Luckily, I was able to cut a mm or two out of its thickness and proceed to the wings. I will be starting the neck and command pod in a day or so...

Should have some pictures to share by Wednesday, 16th March! Wink [;)]

Leelan, Sometimes when we are on a roll and things start to go south it seems pretty bad. I find if I walk away from the bench and have a soda, things look much better when I return to the project. I like to think, "It's only plastic and can always be molded to my will".
I'm really looking forward to seeing those pics.

Haven't done a thing on my little D-7, a cheapo piece of styrene! I am filled with shame! But I watched Star Trek the Motion Picture last night and am all revved up to get back to the D-7 after seeing the cool opening sequence of the Klingon attack.

Hey, it's an unknown object, possibly a life form. Better attack it immediately. Ah, I am fond of the Klingons.

Thanks guys, should finish bottom tonight. The bottom of the ship that is! Big Smile [:D] I'm trying to find an existing shape for the tail. As I look through my "World Airpower" book it seems that a tail section from a commercial type aircraft might work, maybe in 1/144 scale. Anybody have one that they could compare to the shape at the museum?

While I'm waiting to get my PV and Taurus build done I thought I would share this with you guys. I started the saucer for the USS Swordfish awhile back and turned the secondary hull from a piece of hard wood.

From the looks of it, the Kestrel bustle could be made from a 1/32 scale jet drop tank- it looks more like an ovoid, since it seems to wrap around forward. Just a suggestion, and not necessarily a good one. Two tailcones, or something similar could be butted together too.
