Been there traveller - sometimes you just need to hop into the ol' isolation chamber & chill out!

As promised, some progress on the wing tips herr Manny!

Atthis point, the plastic sheet is the law, so I dropped basswood sheet underneath the tips, traced the outline...

Razor saw & sandpaper until smoothed out - at 90 degree angle - to match the silhouette. Then I spent some time thinning the trailing edges - not so obvious in these pics. I didn't want to go too far with the thinning until I start adding the upper skin.

And tips in place.

I went this route after looking at the way the styrene was meeting at the tips. It seemed like it was going to be quite difficult to get a good shape there - too thick because of the bracing, too thin if I didn't use bracing at all, and it would have been difficult to get a convincing profile shape as well. Now that I have it this far I can leave it untill I get the rest of the wing skinned in with styrene, blend the shapes together. If I were to do this again, I would probably make the basswood longer, maybe all the way to the central spar so I could take advantage of the ability of the wood to be sanded to shape on the leading edge.

Great work, Vance! It's been a challenge but this time I think I see you winning!

I finally got hold of an appropriate shade of gray ("G" in the instructions) for all the internal and gear parts on the Revell 229 and this evening marked up all the bits on the sprue to receive it. With any luck I'll load up the AB tomorrow and get this one underway. (Interior of the gear bays as well...?)

Cheers, M/TB379

Traveller, I've almost finished a 1/35th MBT that I dropped. Twice. After the second time I resisted the desire to fling the thing across the room and then slam dunk it in the trash can. Put the model back in the box and leave it for a week. Spend some time with the family, reading, watch some movies on DVD, whatever and come back later.

Anyway that's my advice for what it's worth.

Vance: Looks awesome so far!

Dang Manstein, you keep pushing Vance till you find out he took so long because he's building a 1/1 real 229. Then Vance flies over the Castle Manstein and drops a bunker buster on you... Whistling

Good stuff Thunderbolt, looking forward to the pics.

My progress last night? Well, one of Manny's spies caught me NOT working on the Horten wing:

The look of pure Prussian disgust is priceless... or is she just sleepy? I can never tell with cats.

Maybe now some of these "agents" will stop snooping around my house....my modeling elves are getting nervous....just in case they just rolled this off the production line to help them protect the home front...

(more pics are posted on another thread.)

Gave my Ho a nice warm soapy bath...after that have started with the engines....interesting...my first DML/Dragon kit.....nice detail...strange grainy surface...terrible seams on the engine halves... I hope it gets better as I move along.

Carlos,

Manny posted some photos of the cockpit and a half complete airframe back on page 6 of this thread.

He also posted some photos of a fantastic bare wood build on page 1 and 2.

Funny I hope poor JeffW isn't now trying to figure out to get his wife to let him pay $229.00 for a stamp... Tongue Tied

Hi all, I'm making some progress on the 229, and hope to have WIP pics soon. The cockpit is done, am working on the engine bays, looking at curing the see-through effect with something, and hope to have the fuselage closed up soon. Add the wings and gun bay panels and she'll be ready for masking. I'll be working in MM Acryls, and will need to order in the RLM 81 and 82 which would be a good bet for a Luft '46 scheme.

Cheers, Mike/TB379

WIPs as promised:

All grist for the 229 mill, really, not a difficult kit and one with potential to be adapted to all sorts of possible marking schemes. I've a hankering to do a tropical scheme such as still used in Italy in '44...

I've been looking at plan sheets and comparing them to finished builds on the web, especially that unpainted one where you get to see the natural wood. The "panel lines" where the skin sheets met are awful interesting, but not reproduced by Revell. Would it be accurate to say the timber would be dressed to a superbly slick finish and the joints would essentially disappear, puttied and painted over? There's no point scribing heaps of lines if they're not accurate...

Just gotta do something with the see-through effect, then I can do the major assembly work. I'm looking forward to the camo...

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Looking great, Mike!  I always liked the look of the "unpainted" factory plane---if you go that route it will be really cool...I have the full article on how the guy did it if interested...

Sweet...one thing to consider is that slot behind the pilot for the canopy is fiction...the canopy slid on conventional rails...might want to fill it in.  Great detail in the cockpit!

good point boss-man I really havent thought about that...I was also looking at the front-sides of the pit that are open to the engines....I imagine there must have been some kind of firewall or something....I dont think you were able to see the engines from the pit...
