Progress -- yellow is masked, Tamiya tape is a bit hard to see again RLM 04, but it's there"

Will burnish the bits down before the next round of paint. That'll be preshading with NATO black...

Carsanab -- sweet, I confess to developing a softspot for floatplanes and indeed for Japanese markings. I did Hasegawa's N1K1 floatplane at the beginning of the year and really enjoyed it.

Okay, as promised, WIPs! Here's the masked intakes, rolled paper and packed tissue:

Next, RLM 04 on.

The yellow is a homebrew, I don't have MM Acryl's 04 yet so I mixed it from Tamiya, XF-3, XF-2, XF-64 and XF-7 (10:17:2:1). You'll notice the AB is splattering a bit, the acrylics never seem to go through as cleanly as enamels used to. I'll clean it thoroughly before I get to the camo. Next up, masking...

Cheers, M/TB379

Thanks for the kind words, but I'm going back to armor.

now you have to give a floatie thingie a try....those are fun..

Well, I've always liked Fletcher-class destroyers.  Built a Revel "The Sullivans" back in the dark ages.  A "Graf Spee" would be nice, too.

Darnit, you silver-tongued fire-breathing radioactive lizard!!!  You're the cause of my feeble attempt at the HO229!!  YOU.  ARE.  A.  DANGEROUS.  LIZARD!!!

those are big floaties.....I was thinking more along the lines of...

The green turned out much, much darker than it looked in the bottle.  My screw-up.  We'll see if/how I can salvage the situation.  Every construction is anexperiment.

Mike,

You A/B it or hand painting it? If you are using an A/B mix the paint with a touch of white and lots of thinner and spray it back over the green and it will lighten it up.

Looking good Major Mike!

For myself, I figured out how to mask the intakes yesterday -- removed the compressor spikes, inserted rolled paper and packed the voids with tissue. I may be getting to the RLM 04 today. Pics to come...

M/TB379

Good advice, thanks.  Seeing as this is only 1/72nd scale, I think I'll go on with the camo job and touch up the intakes, etc with a brush.  This project reminds me why I like armored vehicles.

Sprayed the dunkel grun on over the primer grey.  Some bleeding underneath the masking tape, but I'll come back with a darker green to even things out.

Say Maj., just curious why you didn't spray the lighter color coat over the entire topside and come back in with the darker color in the splinter pattern? (as per what I have read about doing splinter camos, although never having done one yet)

You are absolutely right.  Both of the greens look very close to the same color.  I'll let this dry another day, apply new masking and spray with the next color.  We'll see how badly I may have befarkeled  it.

Every project is an experiment.  Its not like I know what I'm doing.

LOL...good catch, Reasoned.  Don't know why I missed that but it is much easier to do it the way you described...hit it with the lighter of the two colors, mask---then hit it w/ the darker...

Looking good to me Mike!

Oh and on a side note. In the lastest Scale Aviation Modeller International magazine (nothing against FSM), there's a model and aircraft profile on the Hs129.

Looking good to me MajMike. I see you had the wing to fuselage gap problem that I had. I think that was the worst thing about the kit. Looking forward to seeing it painted up.

I'll shoot some photos of my 1/72nd scale HO and post them tomorrow.  Its been filled, sanded and primed in MM Light Grey enamel.  Plan on going with a dark green/light green splinter camo pattern with helblau on the lower surfaces.  Aircraft will be numbered "229".

It will make a suitable BB gun target.  Working on it has reminded me why I like armored vehicles.

I am seeing a cool &  wet weekend shaping up, which should translate into bench time! So I should be able to completely take over the kitchen table work bench and make some real progress. I'll be trimming my styrene wings back some to make room for the basswood leading edges, sanding & shaping them in place.

On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister

Two on the assembly line -- my PhD went in a week ago and I'm more or less recovered, so production-lining three models all in 74/75/76 will be a task coming up soon. One of my Hos is among them. The tropical colours for the other are out of stock and backordered...
