It falls under "Luftwaffe Special Projects". It will be built up to look exactly like an American nightfighter, but is in fact meant to be used to house a pair of very small fallschirmjagers in phoney drop tanks, to be dropped behind Allied lines. But, like I said, it will still look like an American a/c... Whistling

Umm Vance...don't rekon I would have told that. The Field Marshal will not tolerate cahorting with other subjects.

I'd just like to announce that I spent several hours at the bench last night... but didn't do squat on the Horten. (For some reason I got the urge to move the ailerons & flaps on a Revell P-38...)

I have always thought a night fighter camouflage scheme over European splinter looked very cool. Like the one on a Owl observation aircraft in the 'Build Better Models' special issue this year in FSM.

Very creative and well executed schemes! Looking forward to more.

Richard: Looked up banana in my Japanese dictionary and the Japanese word for banana is..... banana...

Seems to be one of their 'borrowed' words from English. Stick out tongue

Traveller: Cool. Check the photos Manny posted earlier in the thread showing how one modeler did a 'naked' 229 showing the wooden and metal bits. Not much option since pretty much all Japanese planes were either NM or green over grey. I suppose you could do the whole plane in the underside grey and then do some sort of green camo like the weird long wiggly green lines like they did on the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien (TONY) on the uppers. Just an idea. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

BTW: Happy Birthday!!! Cake

Gamera, I am still trying to think of a paint scheme!! I was going to do an allover metal scheme until you said it was basically a wooden aircraft!! Now I am not too sure what I am going to do. I have not been able to do much lately, work and 90% humidity fixes that up!!! I hope to do some work in the next few days, not today as its my Cake!!!!!!! I am turning into a grumpy old man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least I share this day with Joe Frazier, and Hermann Goering, the some time chief of the luftwaffeStick out tongue

Gamera,

A quick google translation of "divine banana" ended up with "kami-banana" as result.... Probably coz' they didn't put in banana in the dictionary but still wanted to share it...Geeked

Ah, way cool! Gamera me likie the Japanese scheme! Very nicely done. I did a similar scheme on an F-14 what-if build...I will not grace you with a photo as it did not turn out well....Yours looks great, especially dig the lightning bolts.

P38 love the wormie winter scheme you got there! I will use that as inspiration for a Stuka I am working on! Very good idea!

thanks ODD !

its pretty easy,, just time consuming.. It took about 2.5 hrs or so,, ( i was also watching John Wayne in True Grit while doing it.. lol.. Surprise, I have TV w cable on my workbench.. Yes) I just rolled the silly putty out real thin, snake like.. cut w hobby knife, scrunched, twisted, bent to the shape,, and applied it..

Yeah, my coffee hasn't kicked in yet - I could have sworn you typed "rubber bands and chimps." Which would have been COOOOL btw.

thanks Herr Field Marshall... and you to Vance..  ! lol.

yup.. the worms... lol..

the biggest fit issue I had was the nose wheel gear and arms.. what a PITA.. PITA... !! the location points and pivot attachment points are small and not well formed. Sad

The only other fit issue was the nose cone to the fuselage,, took some manipulating, and some heavy sanding to get it flush... the dragon kit, seems to fit ok,, but there are no locating pins, so trying to manipulate seem-fit can be a pain.. I did it in steps, with lots of rubber bands and clamps..

P-38: I was thinking from your first photos that the 229 looks very sinister in black then you threw me for a loop with the cool mottle effect you went for. In 48th scale the camo would probably end up hard edge so don''t sweat it. Very cool effect and very cool idea. I'm going to have to pick up some silly putty, it looks a lot easier than trying to free hand camo with an air brush.

Vance: Thanks, and I love the term 'divine banana'. May have to look that up and use it rather than bat as a name... Stick out tongue

Gamera - yep the lightning bolt is bright but I think you're right, they would have flaunted this as "the divine banana..." or such. I think a little darkening around the panel lines etc would probably blend this a little. Hmmmmm, Jap plane with plywood skin - they would have had to cut down a pile of cherry trees to make one of these things!!

P38 - the worms... THE WORMS..... make them stop!!!!! I see you went with squiggles that look like a 229, not 229 individual squiggles - good call! A little weathering & she'll look ready for the next mission.

Minimal progress for me over the weekend, a few more spars cut out of basswood before more family dropped in (pssst - note to family - I'm fine now, and would just like time with my, uhh, Ho...) and some sketching out of the best way to attach them to each other.

Thanks guys! You're too kind Embarrassed

Going to add a little paint chipping around the cockpit and the access panels on the 'fuselage'. But I'm assuming that such a high tech machine would be kept in good maintenance unlike a old Ki-43 stuck somewhere in China or some Pacific island. Plus I have no idea how to chip the paint on a wooden aircraft like that. Confused

Traveller: Looking forward to seeing how your 229 comes out. The Schniender version sounds awesome.

Gamera,

EXCELLENT!!Stick out tongue Love what you have done to this jap 229. I personally don't think the flashy lightning numbers are too much. The japs would have seriously celebrated a plane like this in their arsenal after all the spanking they received at that part of the war...

Seriously can't wait to see some dirt and grime on herWink Very well done!Yes

Gamera

Vetteman, here is the top! The bottom has only the hinamaru so it's kinda dull and I'm not posting it.

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab85/Tempest977/229%20GB/DSCN0047.jpg

After applying the nine with the lightning bolt it seems a little over the top. But then again without the German splinter camo the a/c is kinda dull so hopefully it won't be too loud once she's faded and weathered a little.

Excellent...this is a very creative take on the 229; very nicely done...As most of the surfaces of the 229 were wood I'm glad you didn'y go crazy with the paint peeling effect, and I appreciate the "229" ID number on the nacelles...Yes

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! I am doing a Jap version myself, but you beat me to it!!! There is nothing wrong with what you have done, who knows how they would of painted it. When I was in Vancouver BC in 2005, I saw a float plane version for the Schnieder Trophy race of 1947! That was great too!!! Devil

Btw: Look close and I put little white '229's on the sides of the engine nacelles. Just for you Manny!
