dupes, of course I don't mind the addition of the Coree kit!  I also noticed that you made the Tristar Ausf. B as your entry!  Hecka cool dude!  Thumbs Up [tup]

Now correct me if I'm wrong but I don't see either an Ausf. C or an Ausf. F listed.   If that's the case I'd be willing to switch my Tristar Ausf. D to one of the missing versions.

Well Ernest, I figured that if I were slotting you with that resin A, I had better pony up and do the Tristar B! I'm actually considering for a second build doing the Tristar C I have in my stash - we'll see how the B goes together. If it's iffy, then I'll do something REALLY stupid, like try to tackle the DML C "Superkit" that's also languishing in my closet. Shock [:O] So if you want to head in the F direction, that would be sweet. Of course, I have an Italeri F1 that I need to do in Hungarian markings...hmmmm. Whistling [:-^]

Don - definitely trying my best to stay active. The whole divorce sort of wrecked my motivation for a bit, but it's coming back. I know all too well what happens to good GB's when the moderator disappears - trust me, that won't happen! We can definitely use all of the builders we can find, so consider your arm twisted!

JMart - will adjust the list to reflect your TWO Tamiya IV D's. Should be very cool to see them together with the different schemes!

Azgaron - sounds good. Looking forward to both of them!

I have been going through the 10,000+ pics on Wikipedia and have come across some great shot of IV H, at leats I think that's what it is, anyway... the shurtzen on the hull don't hang straight down.  They where kina toed in at the bottom.  Is this the way they are supposed to hang? Or where these all beat up and just about ready to fall off?

Hey wing_nut, yeah schurzen usually hangs like that, probably because

1.  The need to go through foliage.  The plates would hang up much easier on weeds and bushes if they were too far away from the hull

2.  Due to the sponsons there is already a large gap between the lower hull and the hanging plates, therefore the plates don't need to be so far away.

However, even if they did hang down straight, the plate holders on the fenders sometimes bent causing the toe in look.

Does this make sense?

Hi Dupes and all --

Here's my project line-up. The Italeri kit box is a bit banged up, I got it second hand on eBay about two years ago. The accessories are:

  • Tamiya PzKfw IV On-Vehicle Accessories
  • Academy PzKfw IV individual link tracks
  • Eduard turned L/70 barrel
  • Cavalier Jagdpanzer IV L/70 zimmerit for Italeri 266

Photobucket" border="0" />

The problem with the too-bulbous Italeri mantlet is solved automatically, as Cavalier include resin replacement parts for both the dome and saukopf. The fiddly transom too.

Can anyone suggest any other must-have AMs for this kit? Also, what about markings and schemes? Does anyone have a favoruite decal sheet they can recommend? The kit scheme is tri-tone cammo and features balkenkreutzeren only.

Looking forward to building this beast!

Cheers,

Mike/TB379

I have half a mind to pick up a couple more 1/72 vehicles with a Pz.IV chassis after my Panther for the Big Cats GB.  They are incedibly nice to work with and are the perfect size for a weekend projects, or 3 week in my case....  Confused [%-)]

I don't know how this would shrink down, but I think it's almost a GB badge:

I wish I could find one of a unit of Panzer IV's lined up for battle, or better yet, a warehouse filled with roadwheels!  Then again, less is more, so maybe just a close up of a Panzer IV roadwheel?

Hi WN,

Got to the site, can't open the product info, the web seems to be real slow again...

EDIT -- found my way to the pics and info. I'm tempted... But fiddling with microscopic bits of brass is... Is... Well, fiddling with microscopic bits of brass!

Squadron have the full set at the same dicount price. But, I already have the barrel and I'm happy using circle templates for the wheels, so the masks are not strictly necessary. I might consider just the PE set, perhaps mainly for the fenders and armor plates, though it would be great practice to do a bit of folding...

Ah! Squadron have that particular set on special at only half Eduard's own price! That clinches it, a December order there shall be. Now, whatBf 109 decals t they have on special... Big Smile [:D]

Here is a suggestion for the badge - from my new favorite photo archive (HOLY CRAP, have you guys checked this out?  Go up into the Armor forum for the link if you have not already!!)

I know it may not focus, specifically, on the roadwheels, per se, but....

That's a great photo!  Funny thing is there's only 11 Mark IVs yet I get the impression of a whole battalion!!

Thanks Boyd!!

Hey Mike,

You may not want to bother with any of this, but I figured since you were going all out with AM you probably want it to be accurate.  I was working on this same kit for the Hunters GB during the summer (didn't finish...what else is new!)  If I recall correctly the instructions require you to remove the headlight fixture from the starboard fender and the notek light fixture on the port fender (which is correct for the L/70).  Doing this means removing some of the molded on treadplate, leaving a noticable....uh..lack   of   treadplate!!  IF the Eduard PE set comes with replacement fenders or at least treadplate you're set!!  If not you might want to find some generic treadplate.   Lion Roar has some that works perfectly!  OR   Archer now has treadplate that is a decal!!  Yep, decal....it some type of resin that's on a waterslide decal....I bought some and its SWEEEET!!  Much easier to cut and apply than PE!

Another route is later model L/70s had no treadplate at all.  Um, but then you're doing one with zim which means an earlier one....never mind.  Shoot, your Cav Zim set might even have replacement fenders!!

Hi Ernest --

Yes, I remember the business with the fender lights and treadplate, I was going to refer back to The Hunters to look up the details. I like the idea of decal treadplate, I'll need to look into that. I checked the Cavalier set and there are some parts the right size and shape to be fenders, they have molded hinges across them. They might be hatches, though. The Eduard set has replacement fenders, but only the hinged portions.

Oh, Trakz have PzKfw IV 'distressed' roadwheels, on special at Squadron... Not sure if the style applies to a zim'd L/70, but I might as well order them up.

Cheers,

Mike

Man, two good ones already. I'll have to play around with both of these...think the one Boyd threw up may be better just because of all of the open space at the top for "1,000 Roadwheels - 2009", but I'm going to do up both of them nonetheless!

Keep the ideas coming! Big Smile [:D]

Hi Dupes and all,

I just ordered up Eduard PE and Trakz damaged roagwheels to add to the L/70 'project bag,' now I gotta research treadplate, and where to put any light cables and such... Hopefully this'll be my first 'everything-on' build, and I'll even give bending brass a shot!

Marc, I was playing around with the 1st one this morning.  The contrast is low and when it gets down to badge size much of what is in the pic gets lost.  I tried playing with the contrast etc but I am not too good with that stuff.

EDIT

Played a bit more and got this in English and German

Ha haaaa! I like it! It needs some work (not sure I like the font), but with some playing around I can see this being the official badge. Big Smile [:D]

"Strakenrader"! We're even learning some more German with the badge...too cool! Cool [8D]

Anybody else have an opinion?

I really like what Wingy has done with it (is there anything he can't do?!  Is he simultaneously resizing the image for a badge AND developing a comprehensive peace plan for the Middle East?!  Thy guy is good...Tongue [:P])

Anyways, my only comment is that I am bummed that second image I found is the wrong type of road wheel, because I think that one is pretty done iconic - particularly with the guy workin' on them.  Alas... Sigh [sigh]

And, as a final thought, can I get an 'Amen Brother!' to the idea that the photo archive is AMAZING??

1,000 Roadwheels – The Panzer IV and its Variants

Alright, as mentioned in the preparatory thread in the armor forum, this GB is all about the Panzer IV and all of the German designs based off of its chassis. The list is long – even longer than you might think. Current count has us over 25 different vehicles able to be represented, more if one wants to do a bit of scratchbuilding to model one of the many prototypes that were designed but never put into regular service. With that in mind, the GB should probably be called 800 Roadwheels (25x32), but with all the prototypes (and spare roadwheels!) I think we can agree on 1,000. Wink [;)]

GB rule-type stuff:

Running dates will be from January 1, 2009 until December 31, 2009.

Badge claimable upon completion of your build(s). There will be an escalating badge system for recognition of multiple builds - design not decided on yet.

Any/all aftermarket, scratchbuilding etc. etc. is fully allowed and encouraged.

Kits unstarted. No GB crossovers.

Kit must be based on the Panzer IV chassis. Duh!

So let’s try to list all of the vehicles that are eligible. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far – feel free to mention any that I’ve missed so that they can be added.

  • Panzer IV (Sd.Kfz.161) Ausf. A, B, C, D, E, F1, F2, G, H, J. In addition to these, you have the Panzerbefehlswagen and Panzerbeobachtungswagen modifications within the different Ausfuhrungs, as well as uparmored versions.
  • 10.5cm K18 auf Panzer-Selbstfarhlafette IVa, or “Dicker Max”
  • Sturmgeschutz IV
  • Jagdpanzer IV Ausf. F (Sd.Kfz.162), Panzer IV/70(V) (Sd.Kfz.162/1)
  • Sturmpanzer IV (Sd.Kfz.166)
  • 3.7cm Flak 43 Auf Sfl Pz.Kpfw.IV “Mobelwagen”
  • Flakpanzer IV, 2cm “Wirbelwind”
  • Flakpanzer IV, 3.7cm “Ostwind”
  • Leichter Flakpanzer IV 3cm “Kugelblitz”
  • 8.8cm Pak 43/1 auf Fahrgestell III/IV “Hornisse/Nashorn” (Sd.Kfz.164)
  • 15cm sFH 18/1 auf Fahrgestell III/IV “Hummel” (Sd.Kfz.165)
  • leFH18/1 Gw IV b (Sd.Kfz.165/1)
  • Leichte Feldhaubitze “Heuschreke 10”
  • Munitionstrager auf Fahrgestell III/IV

  • Panzekampfwagen IV 88mm
  • Panzerkampfwagen IV Bruckenleger

This list is NOT complete – there are a lot of different prototypes, one-offs, and individual modifications that happened to different vehicles that don’t warrant their own variant names or Ausfuhrungs, but are nonetheless a Panzer IV – based vehicle (think things like “vorpanzers” which were essentially a standard IV with some extra armor bolted on).

Looking at the G.B. rules, are the dates you have posted for sure? I have two group builds to kit finished (one I can't start till New Years Day). If the dates are right I might jump in with something like an Ostwind or an STUG IV (think I have both in my stash)

WOOHOO!!!

The Coree kit has finally arrived!! Party [party]Party [party]

It was actually on my doorstep yesterday, but I got home late and didn't see it as I opened the garage.  I found it this morning because I opened the front door to see how much it was raining!  So I grabbed it and took it work to check it out!  I snapped a few quick photos but haven't had time to really check it out.

This is how a Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausfuhrung A is packaged:

The crazy instructions!!  I took the photos outside and it was breezy.

I'll take more photos tonight after I've had my personal time with the resinTongue [:P]

Got to love the instructions.  They remind me of the instructions that come with the Legends kits.  I just love trying to figure out the assembly from a picture that has the completed model on it.Banged Head [banghead]  But, I must check my own sanity.  I bought another Legends conversion kit.  Dang why can't someone build a decent IDF vehicle.

But just found a set of winterketten tracks for my early H.  Now I know which one I will be building for this GB.  It even matches the bolted on front armor.  This is absed on the echelon decal set.  And bonus I get to have it white washed as well.

As for the dates, starting after the first of the year works for me.  Gives me plenty of time to finish the 251 GB and get my r/c combat warship built as well.

Ahhhhh, too funny! Laugh [(-D]

I'm assuming, Ernest, that as soon as your UHU is done for 251's that there will be a TON of resin goodness flying around the 1,000 Roadwheels thread??? Cool [8D]

Squeakie - the dates are indeed correct, all of 2009. I generally don't like doing such long duration GB's, but in this case I think there's going to be some sort of reward system for doing more builds...and I really wanted to get as many of the Pz. IV variants completed as possible. Let me know if you want in!

moose, I laughed when I saw the instructions!!  I guess full resin kits are usually assembled by experienced modelers so only the most basic instructions are necessary.

dupes, you have my promise that no Ausf. A resin shall touch adhesive until the UHU has reached completion!  To be honest, the Coree kit doesn't look that hard since a lot of the parts are already molded complete (like the bogies!).  I'm actually more intimidated by the 251 halftrack as I am just now realizing I have to paint a complete INTERIOR!!  Yikes!Shock [:O]   When the time comes I'll make sure that I post often to share the resin experience!

Hey dupes,

I just got my zim set for my "semi-completed" 1/48 Ausf. J. I already have the schurzen. But I was wondering if I could include it in this GB as my third build. It would be an almost total rebuild plus it would be my third build. Up to you.
