ME-262: Reich Defender II 10/09-7/10

Sarge, she is really starting to look the part.  I was expecting finished photos by now though!!!

I got the canopy masked and on and then sprayed a base coat on it.  Discovered a lot of my seams were not up to snuff so I got out the Mr. Surfacer and did some more sanding and then re-sprayed the base coat.  I went with a tamiya RLM grey base coat for the wheel wells (cause this is all the LHS had that came close to RLM 02) and decided to spray the whole thing.  With the undersides being black I'm thinking I'm going to build the underside black up slowly and go heavier arond the seams leaving the center of the panels lighter.  I tried doing this on the corsair I built recently and it turned out pretty good.  Anyhoo, couple of pics of the pit and Hans and Frans before it was closed up and then one of where she sits now.  I intend to do her up in the kit decals for Red 10.

Yes, that is the configuration that the instructions show.  Why do you ask?  Is there an alternative configuration for the night fighter?

Butz -- Glad you like my progress, I was hoping for some bench time today but I think it'll be a few days before I can get back to painting the details. I'm doing Heinz Barr's Red 13, a nice splinter scheme with some subtle mottles down soft-demarkation flanks, and a red nose cap.

Razor -- I have that one somewhere in my stash but it's not logged correctly in my list, I can't tell which is which, and after completely reorganising the stash last week to pull out my eBay resale batch I find myself gun-shy of lifting that ziggurat of boxes again... Buying the Revell kit seems the much easier course of action!

Hey Butz Where ya been? The FAA fellows don't let me out to converse too often ya know?

 Dave it has rained and got up to the high 80's again here! Terrible painting weather been watching and waiting for paint and decals to dry all day!  Slowed me up a bit!  But it was caused by the cold front that came down from Canada and dropped the temp to a freezing 67 degrees overnight.  So now your even messing with the weather are you?

Now on top of that this kit had zero details inside where the landing gear would go if retracted.

Worse yet when I saw Rudraticans pics I had already sealed that area up. So like a ship in a bottle I just added a few things that kinda sorta looked a little not really like his stuff and at least something is there where there wasn't before?  Is that a run on sentence?

 Put on the wheels now and don't look at it any more! LOL!

A solid weekend of work has the two Seagulls finished for the USS San Francisco. I'll save you the "fits on a penny" shot, but these a/c are small. Tom's PE set came with one set of interplane struts, luckily two propellers, so everything else is from scratch with .010 wire.Pretty so-so.

Hans Von Hammer thank you for the paint mix, I like it.

Now, eight 5" guns.

Aaron, that paintjob is superb. An exact match to the box art. Galland would be proud.

Dave, love the figgies in the pit. Looks like the pilot has beenadoing, what we had beenathinking Billy Bondo was doing! Either that, or hes in the standard pose for a free kick or a game of dodge ball, LOL

Hopefully, ill be joining in the fray, either today or tomorrow. After seeing all the good stuff, I really cant wait. (2 Days off)

Aaron- STICKERS, YAY!!!   Great tip on the paper for details, I always enjoy your innovative modelling techniques.  Well done, you're almost there!

Dave- Oh yeah, I like! Nice job with Hans and Frans, how do they see through the gray windshield? LOL  I'm with Butz- love the overall gray.

Aaron: Yeah. I know! I got the bug bad for this one. These German birds are some of my favorites but they can be a real pain to paint. Anyway, the finish is looking great and the added detail to the gear bays looks awesome!

Dave: Looking good! Actually, if you are building it as "Red 10", that would be good old Kurt out front. But Kurt and Frans just doesn't have that jingle to it.

As for the armament, I have seen pics of B-1a/U1s with both the standard four 30mm MK 108s and some with just two long-barreled MK 108s in the two bottom ports. I am not to sure about what setup "Red 10" actually had though. Now, all the A-1a fighter variants with the exception of the U1, U4, and U5 had the standard brace of four MK 108s.

 Alright, I have a question on whether or not to use Aires PE IP or go the stock and use the kits with the sa-weet decal..

 Not to sure in what I want to do.. Just checked out my previous 262 build and you can see the IP rather well.. However the decal looks good as well.

 I think what it boils down to is the work.. lol What do you think bro? And yes, I have begun the build.. Got a few ideas up my sleeve so stay tuned!!

 Ugh, decisions decisions.... lol

As prominsed, Im here and at it with gusto,

1st up, what looks better than a bench like this, mmmmmm,

to start, i had to check that the huge hunka resin was going to fit, so i hacked of a perfectly serviceable piece of Tamiya,

luckilly for me, it did,

If anyones done an Aries resin cockpit before, youll know its a fairly indepth kit. Part of the kit are 2 beautifull resin sidewalls. to get these in nicely you need to remove the moulded on ribs on the fuse. this was done with my Mission models Chisel,

Next up, i decided to give the cockpit a coat of RLM66, this was done with Tamiya XF-63 German grey. I also did the seat and painted the back cushion. I gave the seat a light wash with black and a few points in the cockpit. The cockpit still has to be detail painted,

Guy you are a machine! You wasted no time jumping right in on the 262. I really need to get to removing some parts from the sprue tonight. That is going to be one cool 262 with that big gun hanging out of the front.

Aaron, sorry if I created some unplanned work for ya . I like what you're doin' though. Takes some guts to add all that after she's buttoned up. Most of the added detail on mine was just the wiring & the plumbing. This kit is packed with detail that just screams atcha sayin' "Go ahead, make me better - I DARE YA!!" I didn't back off.

There'll be no progress on her tonite though - 2hr season finale of Hell's Kitchen. Gotta watch!

I soo knew you were going to say that.. And wouldn't you know it, my batteries decided to crook on me... And I thought I had bought rechargeables.. Wonder if I can get a refund? lol

 Ugh.. They both look good in there own ways.. The Aires PE IP is nice and very thin.. You also get a clear placard with the dials highlighted in black and the dail faces clear.. Which thouse will be painted before I would apply to the IP..

 I think the thing is is that fact I will have to sand the dials flush with the kits IP, dry fit, dry fir some with placard in place then glue...

 Ah hell.... I'm going to use the PE IP...

 Sean I don't know why that Monogram 262 isn't more popular! It is a very nice model aside from the fact that you get a lot of bang for the buck!

Guy what can I say! After an awesome Corsair with the tiniest German edge( hey it's your signature after all) Comeback kid with the disolved wings and all! You jump right in head first into a mutant Messersmitt! Aleays the show stopper.

 I added the gear and must say it looks nice to my eyes on the Galland 1/32 Hasegoowa gooey version. Now all those panels and windows that were just white glued in place are now off again to add engines and Gun compartment detail and the final pit stuff.

I am having internet issues some outtage for the area code so I shall post pics when I get a chance!

Rudderratsio, that cockpit is looking sweeeeet. The IP wires are always a great addition as they really show through the canape. So far your pit looks spot on. Seat belts dont look bad either

Hi chaps, great thread, and yes, the banter here is certainly fun.  Might I ask if it's too late for one to join in?  If so, I'd like to come onboard with the Eduard S-92 (or CS-92, there is also that option).  Colour scheme is either Czech, or (if it's acceptable, and I can find some decals) the supposed Israeli version.

Interesting point about the Japanese 262 is that the Japs actually developed two completely separate '262' and completely seperate engines, neither of which had any direct relationship with the ME262 as all they had were pictures, no plans, as these were onboard the sub that was sunk.  Can't remember the names of the two Jap jets.  One was the Kikka, but the other is beyond me...

Right lads!  Some excellent work, with lots and lots of great interior work!  I can't wait to get mine onto the bench, hope there are still some who are building here!
