Baron, those two builds bring back some memories... I think the last time I built that Zero Jimmy Carter was in office...Wink

Same goes for my F-86, now that I think about it...Hmm I pulled mine off the sideline and resumed paint owrk today. I did nto have too much time at the pint bench today due to family matters. But I did get the IPs and cockpit side consoles on my builds drybrushed. Tomorrow will be clear glue over each instrument.

F-86 tub w/IP and IP seperate

F9F tub w/IP and IP seperate

More to come within 24 hrs or so...

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

How ya doin'?  Yo, Ant'ny, time for me ta stop messin' around and show my progress, capisce?

I wanted to get some pics up, to show that I haven't been sitting around watching all this time.  So, a progress update on my entries.

First up, the Zero.  This was an eBay find, an old boxing, that I originally picked up for my Midway collection.  The old box cover:

and a look at the parts:

Typical of Monogram's design at the time.  Very simple construction and operating features (working landing gear, spinning prop) with a decent level of detail, but perhaps not 100% by today's standards.  The cockpit consists basically of the instrument panel.  But once you close everything, you can't really see it, anyway.

The kit is basically an A6M5 model 52, which I say because of the exhaust stack.  I'll finish it in late-war IJN colors.  Breaking the assembly down into subassemblies, I did the cowling first.  Here it is, basically complete:

There was a hairline crack on the top side, which was easy enough to repair by flowing a little liquid cement into it.  From the right side:

Tamiya Flat Black out of the rattlecan, and Flat Silver for the prop and spinner.  A little Tamiya Flat Aluminum applied for chipping along the cowling panel seams, and also dry-brushed onto the engine details:

Of course, when the prop is in place, you can't see much of the engine at all, so I didn't want to waste a lot of extra effort on it.  I'm trying to keep this one out of the box as much as possible.  I did have to address the one part that was missing, the propeller shaft.  A piece of toothpick did the trick.

Final assembly of the fuselage and wings is awaiting completion on painting the pilot.

Here is a shot of my other entry, the SBD kit, which I will finish as a USAAC A-24 stationed in the Philipines in December 1941, inspired by, and as a tribute to, the men whose actions were described in "Doomed at the Start":

Most of the effort has gone into drilling out the holes in the dive brakes, which I'm doing in two passes, because the first bit that I used was a little too small, the holes didn't look quite right, when I was finished.  Also, I've laid down some color in the cockpit, and painted the crew (they're almost done.  For this kit, too, I'm trying to finish it out of box and not go nuts on it, because I want to finish it Wink

Both of these are relatively simple subjects, and I'm trying to keep it that way, while getting the best finish that I can.

Comments and criticism are welcome, thanks for looking!

Other Monogram kits in progress right  now:

2 P-36 kits in 1/72

2 P-40B's in 1/48

1 P-47B bubbletop in 1/48

Tom Daniel's Red Baron hot rod (for an automotive group build at AgapeModels.com)

Lots more in the stash!

Hans-I humbly submit my two build choices-1/48 P-51D & 1/24 Cobra

The Mustang will be built w/8th Air Force decals-not sure whose yet.  It's going to be a 'joint GB' build for Bish's 8th Air Force GB.

I'm planning on using the kit decals for the Essex Cobra......unless I can find some AM decals at a reasonable price.  Maybe even weather it up a bit.....like it would look like after a race.  That and the fact that in the '60's, going fast was the first priority.....looking good was further down the list.

I anxiously await your decision.

I ... saw where "Big Beautiful Doll" was Lt. Col. John D. Landers.  According to "Fighter Pilot Ace List" he had 14.5 kills, yet it looks in the box picture he had a lot more than that.

After he took command of the 8th Air Force, Jimmy Doolittle allowed fighter pilots "kill credit" for enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground, so kill markings were sometimes applied to the pilot's aircraft by the crew chief.   It was strictly up to the pilot whether or not he did this...  Most didn't, as they felt that taking out an enemy aircraft on the ground was "easier" than doing it in the air, however, some of the guys that got damaged,  wounded, or even shot down while attacking Luftwaffe airlfields would argue that point...  While they may have had been low on pilots and fuel, the Luftwaffe was never short on AAA...

A few pilots even changed the style of kill-marking to denote whether they had scored in the air or on the ground, usually in a mix of Hakenkreuz and Balkenkruez kill-markings... It varied from squadron to squadron, and from pilot to pilot...

Other times, kills that were credited initially to a pilot were later withdrawn (or given a "shared" kill) upon further review of gun camera footage, eyewitness accounts (both airborne and on the ground) and consolidation of debriefing reports...

The US Air Force only credits air-to-air kills by pilots (and gunners), and the American Fighter Aces Association only lists pilots (and WSOs) with five or more confirmed air-to-air kills.  Probables aren't credited...

BTW...There're a handful of bomber gunners that are also "Aces", however they are not recognized by the AFAA (It's a "Fighter Piots Only" club)..  On that note, one of the guys that flew with me on "FiFi" back in the 90's got a MiG-15 while a B-29 gunner in the Korean War.  Said he was actually firing at another MiG and the one he got just flat flew slap-into his line of fire, lol...

Herr Hammer, I present you my first offering: The A-10 Warthog.  Cockpit detail, simulated brake lines and scratched detail in the gear bays add additional detail to this kit.  And a special color-scheme to liven things up!   The bright ray of morning sunshine streaming through my window presented a nice photo opportunity.

BOMBS!!

Don Hammer and guys an young lady I wish to submit my official start pictures of the P-51D Passion Wagon. Box art showing the kit is Revell Monogram and I got interior green painted and a bit of gluing done, well the seats and drop tanks are glued Hmm

Perhaps you could clarify, I was looking at the crazy checkered nose art wondering if that came on the decal sheet (it does after looking at the Revell website) and saw where "Big Beautiful Doll" was Lt. Col. John D. Landers.  According to "Fighter Pilot Ace List" he had 14.5 kills, yet it looks in the box picture he had a lot more than that.  I picked up the Tamiya F-51D (was on clearance) and am anxious to see your build.

p38j: why do you have your models hanging like that?

OWL.. ,its not real obvious from the pic.. but they're hanging like that because I just shot them with rattle can primer.. and they're hanging in my scratch-built spray booth while they dry... Whistling which is a oven overhead exhaust fan, like you would have in your kitchen.. I duct taped furnace filters around 3 sides and the bottom, the hood comes with a fan, filter and light.. If you use the charcoal filter, it cuts down on the fumes and I spray inside.. I have it hanging in my mancave by some lamp chain and hooks from the ceiling.. The furnace filters stop the overspray, the fan catches the rest, and pulls it thru the charcoal filter, works really good.. Yes

...hey Chief, who does your electrical?!

ummm I do.. !  lol.. cut up an old extension cord and rewired it... then jus plugger her in to the wall..Propeller

Don Von Hammer,

I have been lurking at this group build for a while now and would like to join in.  I plan on building a P-38J and a P-40B (both are 1/48)  if those are acceptable.   The P-38J will be started first since I am also in the P-38 Lightning group build.  These will be my first builds in about 30 years but I loved Monogram models when I was younger so I couldn't pass up a chance to be made in the Monogram Mafia.

Hey Vetteman- I just acquired Crying a copy of a book called "The Yoxford Boys" published in 1971, a unit history of the 357th FG. It's got lots and lots of info about Roberson and "Passion Wagon". Let me know if you need any research, I will try to help.

Eatthis man where do you find the time ? Nice starts on all of em man.

Bondoman Rommels Rod is lookin good, some nice chassis work you have done there.

CallSignOwl to my eye your decals look fine, well done young lady.

Got some trimming and cutting an a bit of gluing done on my second build for the group, nothing worth posting official start pictures of yet. And I am still waiting for Don Hammer to approve my build change so I know what colors to paint the pit Stick out tongue This one I am building OOB other than seatbelts and a bit of wire added to the gear bays, oh oh and the decal set for Passion Wagon. I do plan to drop the flaps and pose control surfaces too. And, and, Cowboy I hope it looks good when finished. Well maybe it isnt OOB but the only AM will be the decals anyways.

OWL

Anything involving the Monogram Mafia should be slightly crooked! Wink I like those markings, the little splash of white really catches the eye.

and here are the finished decals. For a kit that has been in a box for who knows how long, the decals adhered well. Almost too well in some areas...they stuck before I could get them into final position. SO excuse some of the slightly crooked markings!!

Now onto the final fiddly bits and the dull coat!

Alrightee-oh cool cats and far out chicks. A little action down at the chop shop. The 251 rear end finally came in from Germany with a bunch of parts. Did you know "Hanomag" is German for "Monogram"? (spelled backwards).

Chopped and channeled that chassis and brought 'er down.

Lower that mill, Ludwig.

Don Hammer, since I took care of dat 'ting for yeh, and cut sprue on the Goshawk, let me kiss your ring.

wow, I go away for a week and you guys go crazy with the updates!  LOL    I'm back in my dorm room now, and should be finishing up the decaling on the A-10. The hog mouth gave me a bit of grief settling down over the compound curve of the nose, but nothing too difficult.

Don Hammer I come here today with a small humble request. If you will allow me this request I will start my second build and meet my obligations to family tradition with 2 builds for the group.

I humbly request a build change, I will explain. If you remember I built Lt. Arval Robersons P-51B in the "Before They Were Aces Group Build. I would at this time request that you allow me to build his P-51D Passion Wagon that he did become an ace in. It is also the same aircraft Cpt. Charles Weaver became an ace in after Lt Roberson finished his tour. The kit will be the same Revel/Monogram 1/48 P-51D that I signed up as the Air Racer Risky Business.

Don Hammer I await your answer and hope you allow me this small request, and thank you for allowing me to speak with you on this matter.

My Daughter is in Jr. High, and brings stuff home on a regular basis.  My Wife and my Daughter never seem to get more than a light sniffle occasionally, but I tend to get a really bad infection.  They get a sniffle, I get 102.5 temps, chills, and all of the other annoying flu like symptoms.  Last week wasn't much fun, but it's getting a little better now.  I think it sholld be gone in a couple more days.
