Mike: glad to hear you're getting settled in. Nice to have your own workshop.

Russ & Ken: nice work guys. Don't tend to make such radical modifications myself but those are gonna look sharp when finished.

Thanks Cliff for the compliment!

I got the molded on doors cut off:

Tomorrow I will work on cutting out the holes in the fuselage to make room for the interior boxes.

Yeh Dom, but like I said. The nozzles probably cost more than the kit itself.

In the Hangar: 1/48 Hobby Boss F/A-18D RAAF Hornet,

On the Tarmac:  F4U-1D RNZAF Corsair 1/48 Scale.

Hey Russ, no worries man. Not everyone is cut out to be the class clown.

Heck, back in the late 40's, when I was renting a luxury unit on The Rock,

I had a 'life coach'. Yeah, my little unit had lots and lots of privacy.I paid a lot extra for that!

Four painted walls, and only a letter-box opening for a view.

I had room service, and they would put my gourmet meals through that

letter slot.....errrr....yeah and the hotel's name if I remember correctly

was The AlcaTropics......errrr....so about once a month

the concierge would have the bellboys escort up to my life coach's office

to check up on my 'self improvement program.' They always brought me a nice white suit to wear

so I was properly dressed.....great service.

Where was I.....errr...my life coach always told me I had a great sense of humor.

In fact, he said that a sense of humor like mine only came around every 1 in 100 million times

so I liked him as he was so complimentary. He would say "Yah know Dom, you are so

funny, we don't think the big ole' world is ready for you yet.......why don't you stay

here for another quarter century or 2? -Dang, he was so thoughtful and encouraging.....errrrr

Yeah, I'ld still be there but one day, when the bellboys come ta git me, I tell 'em a joke so's funny, they laffed so hard, they all darn gon 'n fell over the bannister railin right into that big foyerie, laffin' all they way to the pavement!

Well, there was so much commotion......err...... i decide to go to the beach for a swim......it was

a bit disa poyntin' though........the beach was very rocky and the water was a lot colder 'n I spected....errr

A pal jes happen ta stop by with his sport fishin' boat and gave me a lift back to the marina.....

Gosh I miss that hotel......Smile

Hey, I got that MIG 17 in.

I compared it to the MIG 15 and even though I've read a bit about them,

It's interesting to see the modifications. What is sobering is that the '17

was still basically the '15, and had pretty much the same power plant.

It was able to take out much more powerful and technically advanced

aircraft.

When i compare the two and see that the 17 must have been quite a bit longer,

and it looks like overall more wing area, the modifications made a significant

improvement to its performance. The other thing, as John Boyd pointed out, is

that the '17 was also defeating a very technically advanced missile system.

I'll try and send pics this weekend.

At least the guy selling the Hasegawa kit thinks it is pure gold!  I noticed that no one has bid on it yet.  But of course it isn't over yet.  It will be interesting to see if anyone does.

Hi Everyone,

I got a late start tonight but made some progress.  I marked the location for the holes in the fuselage where the auxiliary air intake boxes should go and made the first cut:

I also cut off the resin mold stubs from the boxes:

I also spent some time researching my "The Modern Phantom Guide:  The F-4 Phantom Exposed" to get more of an idea of how it should look when it is done.

Dom

Yes, I got involved with working on it before I rememberd to take any pictures.  What I did was I took a couple of rubber bands and put them around the fuselage halves to hold them together.  Then I took the wing and held it in place against the bottom of the fuselage while I used a fine point felt tip marker to outline the holes that I had opened up in the wings last night.  After that I removed the wing and rubber bands and used the Dremel to cut the holes.

Thank you Russ for the compliment!

I am not sure that the auxiliary air intakes are available in 1/72 scale.  They just came out in 1/48 scale last year.

So Ken;

i couldn't make out which way the boxes point in the fuselage. That is, which one is port, which one is starboard, and how you can tell the front of the box from the back end.

No worries about the photos Ken, we appreciate what you can post. I figure I probably spend more time taking pics than making cuts these days.Smile

Hey guys, move is going slower than we hoped. But were getting there.

A while ago you guys were talking about the buff and i remember seeing a B-52 screwing up an inflight refuel, i searched and searched for the video, couldnt find it, however i came accross this when i ducked into work today.

Dom

Hi Dom,

That is the reason I was doing the research in the book.  The pieces are mirror images of each other.  It is obvious about the fact that it is the engine inside on how to orient the pieces, but there are other parts that will make a difference which side it is on.  Unfortunately my book has several pictures of the auxiliary air intakes but with the engines removed.  I will have to keep looking.

Hi Everyone,

After researching the Aires auxiliary air intakes, I found that the detail is not all that accurate.  In fact, they actually lack a lot of it.  So there is not a real correct side for how they are installed, just as long as the engine and bulkheads are in the correct orientation.  With that, I have one fuselage hole finished cut out:

I will work on the other side tomorrow.
