Doug, that's looking great. And thanks for the complement, it is such an honour to be able to build and share with the great people on here and such amazing modellers.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Doug - Wow! Just when you think you have seen everything amongst this group you step up to the plate and slug one out of the park. Magnificently done my friend. I have some Bare Metal Foil that I got many a moon ago that I used for canopy masking prior to the advent of pre cut masks. Yet, I never had the gumption to use it to that scale.

That foil looks great, Doug. Will be curious to see if it is done or if you will be sealing, weathering, etc. I know zero about metal foil.

Joe... I cant answer the thickness question,  I would doubt that they do. I think the thickness would be about like a cellophane wrapper on a cigarette pack, very thin but still reasonably durable enough to handle and shape. I just cut the piece slightly larger then need be, peel off the backing paper, lay out close as possible  apply and smooth flat with fingers and a Q tip, use a toothpick to CAREFULLY press into body lines ,then use a sharp (translate to new ) #11 blade to trim excess. After application just be careful as handling may cause to raise back up or distort, which can easily be reapplied and smoothed again. I bought this for doing a car model one time to do the trim with, I love the stuff!

Clemens, good to hear fromyou too!  Sure my friend, why not! Again its versatile and fairly easy to work with. I get it here at the LHS! but can be ordered from scalehobbist.com  and others I'm sure. Check it out, its not terribly expensive and again, very versatile.

Take care,

Doug

Doug, that's some excellent work, my friend!  I have to give bare metal foil a go as well. Maybe on my D-13?

Will see about ordering me a sheet of that stuff. Do they come in varying thicknesses? If so what thickness should I get for this application?

Yup! Bare metal foil from the LHS, comes in a sheet about the size of a sheet of copy paper, this is a self adhesive type but still may benefit from a foil adhesive, however...if adhesive is used, be sure to have that booger exactly where you want it. If not, well just try to make sure.... It also comes in various stages of shine and even slight to obvious colors like gold , copper and such.

More later...

Rigidrider

Hey guys, Sorry I forgot, there was a description of some natural metal pieces on the underside, to include the leading edges of the wings and the landing gear doors, I may have done too much but I tried to do what I think was described... This was done with foil.

Doug

That looks friggin amazing! I think you may have answered how I need to accomplish my NMF!!!!!!!!! Bare metal foil???

Having been (unpleasantly) distracted for a while, find myself so many pages behind here that it isn't possible to comment on all the great work going on without taking notes, and inevitably (and inadvertently) missing someone.

Lots of top-notch work going on, and as usual it is all inspirational and educational to me.

Please forgive me for singling out one. Joe (Rix), hats-off re your patience and perseverance.

Doug- Fantastic painting and metal work. Your work never disappoints.

Joe Rix- Man you got to be getting a little tired of sanding by now, but she's looking good. I'm sure it will turn out even better in the end. What a time to have picked such a complicated paint scheme!

Mustang- You've started the Dora! Can't wait to see all that resin come together. Give me 2-3 weeks and I'll be back at the bench with the D-13!

Here's a quick pic of where I'm at in the recovery process. I've applied Mr. Surfacer 500 and 1000 along the edges of the paint to create a smooth surface. It is currently in various stages of completion.

Oh Man Joe, Thanks for reminding me to take a pic of where I'm at now. I feel that I at least have enough progress worthy of showing what I am doing. Not to mention it will help keep JohnCrying from wigging out on us.Wink

Alright... Posting a few more pictures as promised, I most likely wont get any more done till the weekend. I've got the paint pretty much the way I want it, and clear coated, I've started the decals, and will post that progress later, when complete but before recoating with clear to seal.

Thanks

Doug

I second motion that on the 72 nd scale builds. There aint no way, I say, NO WAY I would attempt a 72 nd scale aircraft. Hats go off to those that can pull it off.

Joe - You have a sweet start on your D-9 going on there. Keep it coming.

Doug - I appreciate the reference to my work as magic given that right now my work looks like a hack job.

I am making progress. I've got Mr.Surfacer around most of the edges and am commencing with the mighty slow sanding process.

Cheers You All.

Tony...Always good to see your here and to hear from you! So far the camo scheme is looking good and I will have  more to post soon.

John , I agree about Tamiya paint, however they do make some good paint. I just had this very conversation with the owner of my LHS, a day or two ago. We both agreed that if they offered about .0 more colors concentrating on FS and RLM colors they would have a winning line up. That is why most of my paint needs are ModelMaster acrylics.  Good color matching and easy to use.

Joe... the feeling is mutual, I love watching  builds come together, like Jester... man, what great paint work he does, guys like Joe R and Bish with the magic they work on 72nd kits, just to name a few, and your attn to detail, second to none. I really admire every one here building, so many different  techniques and styles.

More later, Take care all...

Rigidrider:Man youve got a great paint job going on there!! I always enjoy seeing your builds come together. Glad youre building again with us!

Everybody: Thank you all for the birthday wishes. It went pretty good. I only got about 15 minutes bench time yesterday but spent some enjoyable time with the family.

Speaking of benchtime I woke up at about 3 this morning and got about 2-1/2 hours of benchtime in!! I've got most of the cutting, carving, sanding and filing out of the way and am just about ready to start painting and assembling. I cut off the front of both sides of the fuselage at the engine area(gotta open that up you know!) , cut off the rudder and cut open the tailwheel strut access panel and trued up all edges and scraped/ sanded all cut open areas at the front of the fuselage and at the rear to scale thickness. Here's the latest:

Rigidrider

Thanks Guys... I found a little more on the "Tan" (?) color on the sides, Its actually supposed to be a faded blue green. This was not an "old" aircraft and it was , like most at the time, rushed into service without proper preperation as to the finish, and the camo was field applied. The finish suffered from harsh duty, poor quality paint, and rapid turn around to just keep them flying. Interesting...

But , yes I have so far liked the Eduard kit and have since bought 2 more, a D-11 and an A version.

Doug

Doug,

I'm kinda neurotic about my paint colors,  that's kinda way I shy away from Tamiya colors, there's no FS numbers or anything.  I also do alot of research before I start to make sure I got the right colors.  drives me crazy when I don't.  On that note I wish Eduard would use some other color besides Mr. color, at least I think that's what they reference.

Your build looks great, i always fell a little relieved when I can start putting on color!Big Smile

I'm still here, just haven't quite got to this one yet. But I will shortly.

Nice work RR, I'm interested in the camo scheme for that one.

Cheers

Very nicely done Doug. She appears to be coming together beautifully under the guidance of your well skilled hands. Boy, can I relate to the differences in color call outs between references.

Well heres a few more pictures to start with. I've got most of the paint done and will start decals soon, I applied the light blue to the underside and partially up the nose area, and rudder, I started with the pale brown as shown in the Eagle decals and the computer generated print. Not sure what the color is, I just tried to match it. That being said, the decal sheet shows an almost all green upper surface with just a few splotches of brown violet, and the computer generated print shows just the opposite. I tried to find a description of the actual aircraft and just got the RLM#s, not the locations, SO, I did a mostly Brown violet upper with green accents, and (not shown yet) about a 50/50 freehand pattern on the upper wing and tail surfaces. I'm happy with the way it came out, being the decal guide shows that pattern on the color chart.

I will have the other pictures uploaded asap.
