Hey There Bish, Man it would be great to have you join us again.

Good to see you are off to excellent start Joe.

The paint stripping is moving along slowly but effectively. I have over half of the paint stripped from the right side of the fuselage so far.

Allen... Thank you too for the link. I remember as Bish had stated The Pro Modeller brand. I will need to add some of this to my supplies! Thanks again.

Joe... What happened to your front end on your D-9??? It was there in one picture, Now its gone??? (lol)

Doug, Flory wash used to be known as Pro Modeller wash. Its the same thing, different name. I love the stuff and use it on every aircraft.

Given the way this GB  is still going really strong, great idea to extend it Joe. I might just try and squeeze another one in if I can.

Still some great work going on here guys.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Scott: That thing is coming together nicely! I know what you are talking about with the engine detail. I put about one months building time into the engine and after I put everything together you can only see just a fraction of what I did! I have to say this; It was definitely fun building that engine. I had a blast with it. Nice detail on yours as well.

Rigidrider: Doug you are really knocking this thing out of the park too. Cant get over the wire harnesses. That things gonna be a beaut!!

Chanter: Good progress so far. Man the speed at which some of you guys build amazes me.  When I'm in full swing I'll put in between 5-7 hours a week on average which gives me  around 170-250 hours used up in completing one kit. I guess experience is where its at. Your plane is looking great buddy!

Everybody: Well I have the sprues washed and started carving on my D-9 fuselage to display the engine. The resin Aires cockpit has a coat of 66 on it and the seat has been given the usual coat of silver and then I'll apply the 66 to that.  The first pic is before the knife on the L/H side of the fuselage and the second is after with some of the goodies of the cockpit  and cowl gun bay in the pic as well.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and tips, they're very much appreciated.  Looks like I'll need to upgrade my modelling trick bag soon.

Scott: That's fantastic detail work, really nice!

Doug: The Florry wash is the brand name of a weathering product that I heard a lot of people rave about on various modelling sites.  I believe it is simply clay/water based and it quite easy to use - brush on, let dry and wipe away with a damp cloth.  It comes in:  Dark dirt, Light dirt, Rust, Black, Sand, Concrete, Grime and Mud brown.  I ordered mine through Sprue Brothers.

Here is a link to their site, which includes a YouTube video on its use.

I see the end date was extended on this group build.  I may do another, just to stay in touch with this group; what a great bunch.  I do have a couple of 109s I wanted to get at but they may take a back seat again.

Which paint scheme do you choose for your F-8?

Clemens - I'm currently leaning towards the Italian MTO scheme. Yet, I'm exploring other options too.

Allen - It appears to me that you are quite well with your build. Wheel wells look great. A tip that may help you out with sanding putty is dip a Q-tip or something in acetone and rub it on along the putty. It will level out and smooth your putty. Then you can follow up with some sanding. This will save you some sanding and reduce the risk of damaging surrounding detail. This , of course, depends on what putty your using and be aware that applying solvents straight to your surface can potentially damage the plastic. Excellent work.

Scott - Nicely done on getting the fuselage to fit together. Overall, you have an awesome 190 coming together there. I, also do not recall if you posted a planned scheme.

Doug - Thanks. I keep forgetting to stop by our Radio Shack for some thin solder. Unfortunately I'm unable  to get solder that thin at the Ace Hardware store I work at.

Joe: I agree on the "not feeling weak anymore"-part. I love the look and smell of a just opened Tamiya kit! Which paint scheme do you choose for your F-8?

Allen: Nice work! You don't have to sand the putty. Just use a cloth/some q-tips dampened with lacquer thinner (strong acrylic thinner is even better, because it doesn't harm the plastic if used too much) and wipe the putty away.

Scott: Excellent work on getting that fuselage to fit properly!

Morning...

Thanks for the encouragment and kind words,

Joe, I'm fortunate enough to work wjth some small electronic and fluidic components and over the years I have  been able to accumulate and strip enough (as long as they cant be cored) to compile enough micro components and wiring to last me the rest of my life, also there is some plain old sewing thread, and .035 solder sold at radio shack. I of coarse use the solder to make repairs at work, but its also a beautiful source of condiuts and hydraulic lines and very easy to work with, its held in place with super glue and circuit board resin.Later I will "dull" the appearance with Dull coat to remove the shine.

Allen, looking good to me! I'm not sure what Florry is, a brand name I assume, I've never used it. Another suggestion, (something else to add to your building arsenal) I like to buy artist oil type paints in the tube,(a small tube goes a looooong way) Thin to desired effect with paint thinner. Then just brush on and it runs into cracks, contours and such, makes for a very convincing resediue and dirt effect. Please elaborate a bit on the Florrys. Looks like some good stuff.

Scott... Looking like a 190 indeed! Looking forward to more progress... Love the 1/24 scales, Like most though, just have no display space for a large kit like that. Did I miss  your post or have you decided on a paint scheme?

Well what do you know? This Airfix kit is starting to look like a 190 after all. Didn't have any real issues while gluing the fuselage halves together, just went tail first and slowy worked my way forward

I will just need to do a little sanding and filling here and there to smooth things out.

Test fitting the forward cowling to check the engine fans and they're lying recessed inside the cowling where they belong and not extending out some 5mm had I not made the corrections to the cylinder assemblies earlier.

Boy all that detail work I did on the engine gearbox area only to be covered up. Will be adding more detail to the expose portions of the engine and gun deck areas after I'm finish adding a few other sub assemblies. One being the upper wheel well covers that than hides the bottom of the engine. I'm tempted to leave one or both off and do some sort of hanger maintenance dio. Decisions decisions.Hmm

Still tick off with the lower instr. panel but I wanted to move on with the build.  Think the only way to get around that kit flaw was to scratch build an entire new upper and lower instr. panels, just something I didn't want to bother with at this time.

More to come as I get to it.

Scott

Doug, that's really great work!

I made some progress, starting with the gear bays which I sprayed with XF-22, then practiced a bit more dry brushing to pick out some detail.  Sprayed with future and after that dried, I tried some Florry Dark dirt, followed by Florry Mud to try and give it a more used appearance.  I'm certainly open to suggestions or tips to improve on this.  It's all new and experimental for me at this point.

20130817_151424

I got the wings together then joined to the fuselage.  Snapped the pitot tube off (of course), and bent the starboard cannon in the process.  Other than that, it seemed to fit ok but for a gap along the wing root, which I just puttied.  I've read various posts about assembling the tops of wings to the fuselage first to alleviate this gap (?), but I don't think I'm there yet.  Hopefully I'll be able to sand it with minimal issues.

Wing root

That's it for now.  As always, I welcome any suggestions or comments.

Doug - That is some incredible detailing. Very beautifully done. What are you using for the wiring there?

Clemens - Funny you should get that today as mine arrived in the mail today. Any feeling of being weak was quickly alleviated upon opening the box and breathing the styrene and inspecting this rather impressive kit.

Heres just a bit more... I got to work at my bench most of the day (after cutting the grass) . Greg , since you asked, this is how I do my set up for paint, I do all the components, then install, detail, then mask so as to keep as much off the major assys as possible, a bit of touch up is always to be expected. I also like to use a "Lazy Susan" (donated by my wife, But I dont think she realizes yet she donated it) to set parts up on so I can minimize handling. Shes primed now, and if well cured by morning I may start pre shading and mixing colors.

Doug: Very impressive work there, my friend! You really make me want to build one of my 190s with an AM engine (even if that means having the money for one kit less...)

Darren: Lucky you. My LHS has only 10% off on their 190s. That doesn't keep me from buying them though. Here's what I purchased today:

Please add me to the "list of the weak"...

My LHS got some big boxes today! REally big ones. They were filled with  1/32 Corsairs (Tamiya) and B-17s!!! Those B-17 kits are bloody huge!!!! Now I really have to get me one of them!

Joe best of luck with that stripper, I really hope it works out for you

I just woke up, coffee isn't even finished brewing yet. Needless to say my mind is foggy. Found that sentence a bit disorienting for a second, there. <insert broken 'par-TEE!' emoticon here>

Now that's even funnier.

OMG I'm so weak, I went in to the LHS yesterday and they had a whole bunch of Eduard kits at 40% off.  So have a guess who walked out with a D-9 and an A-8.  Looks like I might in this build for a while yet.

Now that's funny right there.

Hey Scott... I have that same kit (1/24) and I'm putting off building, but am starting to sucumb to the urge...

Rider..it's a big bird but one of the major problems is the engine fan blade assembly extending beyond some 5mm from the cowling, I fixed that by sanding down each of the cylinder sub-assemblies.

Archangel Shooter

BTW does anyone know who makes 1/24th figures that might work into a dio with this kit? I recall Tamiya having a race car crew set some years back but no luck finding one I guess they discontinued it.

Scott

Hey Scott. I think Legend productions makes a pilot and a mechanic in 1/24 scale. I was going to get a mechanic for my 109 and decided against it. Gotta get better with my skills before I tackle a figure!!

Scott- I wouldn't worry too much about the instrument panel. Once the windscreen is glued on I doubt it will be that visible. Airfix was probably basing the gear leg oleo cover off earlier 190s. A-1s through A-4s. No doubt with all your work it will still look amazing in the end. Bet you can't wait to get to the painting stage on this big kit.

Thanks for the link John. Unfortunately we have plans already that weekend in Sept. But I'll make it one of these years.

Rix- Man you have the patience of a Saint. Good luck the repaint. I can feel your pain...

That shows some patience Shooter, sanding off those boots! Cant wait to see this one with some paint!

However, I can say that when I ordered my 190 I wasn't terribly enthusiastic, I just wanted to join the GB. Barely started mine and have already developed a fascination for the 190's.

Yup, Here we go. Greg's gonna be good for a for a few additional months.Big Smile

Ahh, thank you, Joe.

I've read about the stretched sprue method, haven't tried it yet. Appears to work well, truly looks good! When I'm ready to give it a go, I'll pick your brain, my friend. :) And I'll bet that Optivisor did come in handy!

Greg, check out this video for a good learning on stretched sprue:

John: Tell me more about Nordicon- when exactly and where? I might be able to get away to the cites the end of Sept. but we usually take an annual trip there after the snow flies.

Nathan,

 here's the link for Nordiccon

it's Saturday Sept 21 at the Boy scout base camp over by the mpls airport.

Joe: Good luck with removing all that paint. I'm sure you're able to handle it!

Scott: Looks very good! I agree with Doug: Airfix kits are not easy to build. That's why I stay away from them and keep ordereing Eduard 190s (they are not that much easier to build...)
