JOE RIX

Joe - It's going to be great watching you build the D-9. Concerning the landing gear, did you check out that link I sent John (I think it was John) about the issues with the landing gear on the Tamiya, DML and Tri Master kit.

Greg - That is the absolute joy of building with the folks here. The amount one learns here is amazing. This leads me to point out to you that our modeling addiction can have certain side effects. I, for one, suffer from the inability to stop buying reference books. I LOVE reference books. I have at least 5 or more books on each kit/subject I have in my stash. Given that I have 70+ kits that means I have, well, you can do the math. This not counting just the general subject and history I have. So, fair warning that you may need to account also for the space required to accomodate one's book stash. That reminds me, I have to share later my latest addition on FW 190s.

Yes it was me you sent the landing gear link to.  very helpful!

Thanks John.  The ole memory isn't quite the same anymore. Heck, It's one thing when I have to write myself a note everyday with a list of things to remember each day. Quite another when I have to write a note to remind myself that I have a note with what I have to do each day. I am Post-it dependent.

Well here's some progress update pictures of 109A-3 I'm finishing that unfortunately is not really a part of this build cuz I started it before I found out about this build.

Almost finished, just the antenna, tail wheel and the LG retraction struts.   Enjoy the pics

That A3 looks fantastic John!!! The progress on the A8 is moving right along smoothly it appears, you'll have it in the paint booth in no time. You may have already posted it, but what scheme are you planning on for it?

It's the OOB decals,  it's very similar to the A-3 I just posted but without the eagles head.    Unless I find something different at mt LHS tonight for a A-8

Joe,
I'm using model master on this one.  I also use a Paashe H AB with a fine tip needle.  I ran into some

problems when I decided to use humbrol number 32 Dk Gray for the wheels as I think the gray looks better than black for the rubber and the Testers "rubber" color paint is starting to look too brown.

But anyway I had a issue of the humbrol staying sticky over the Tamiya spray on gray primer,  Never used Humbrol before so I don't have any idea what it does and doesn't react too.

Hey John, If I may, I suggest Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black for tire colors. You'll find that myself and many others find this to be an excellent rubber color.

I can certainly agree with that! You don't want to know what I have wrapped up in the D-9 and you REALLY don't want to know what I have sunk into this A-8!!

How about that one?

EagleCals happen to have a decal sheet of that one in 1/48:

I am thinking about building that bird instead of Dortenmanns, but the camo kinda scares me... I am sure you are able to handle that without any problems, Joe!

Nice try though Clemens. I have a couple in mind but one of them requires surgery further than what I'm already doing. B\rown 4 was a D-9 with a Ta-152 tail. I think I'm gonna opt out of that one though.

Your A-3 looks great, John. How did the eagle decals behave for you? They look excellent, just wondering if they applied nicely?

Greg,  pretty well for the most part, just don't hit them with Walthers solveset right away.  The small slots right aft of the exhaust needed to be cut with a knife so the decal world go all the way down and then touched up with paint afterward.

Thanks, John. I was looking at either this kit when selecting one for this GB. I wanted this paint scheme, but for whatever reason the eagle scared me at the time. Thanks for the insight. Who knows, I may join the 190 mania and get one. Really like the way yours turned out, that's for sure.

Thanks for the link, mate!

I like the idea of the resin cockpit very much, especially when considering the immense size of the Jug's "office".

I'll wait for it being on sale somewhere though, as the Tamiya kit costs a lot less and is at least as good.

Greg,

You gotta join, This build is sucking you in! (old Jedi mind trick)Whisper

As for the decals, the eagles head was nothing to be afraid of,  just my use of solvaset, live and learn. oh and a nice even glossy surface helps.  So go to your LHS and a get a Fw 190A-3. Big Smile

falconmod:Man I've been meaning to comment on that A-3 you built. That thing looks sharp! Really looking forward to seeing progress out of you on the current build.

everybody: Well I was able to get the cowl MG131's cut up , built (with Master Model gun barrels), and installed on Monday. It took a little tweaking here and there but got em in no sweat. The bad news is that the propeller mount hub rests too far back into the cowl resulting in prop blades that are in contact with the nose of the aircraft. All of that engine fitting that I did to keep the fan in the nose resulted in setting the engine too far back. Got a little surgery to do but will pull it off one way or the other and make it look good.  I did have one thing thats been on my mind though. I see most of the painting guides that say to paint the prop blades RLM 70. I see alot that are black but wasn't sure about the color. I don't have any original color photos that show this color. As for weathering the only thing I can think of for weathering are the oil streaks from the pitch adjustment mechanisms at the base of the blade and usually those are just light stains due to the high operating RPM of the props. Most blades that I have seen of a plane in use are shiny in appearance( I draw that experience from the tail rotor of Huey helicopters that I used to crew). Suggestions on this one?

Mustang,

Thanks for the comment on my A-3, it was a fun build.   I got AM decals for the A-8 I'm now doing.

What do you think?  It's hard to tell from this photo but the top side has a brighter green that is around the cockpit area, not the normal dk gray.  the decals are Aero master sheet 48-696
