I was just thinking I could send the one back to Hobby Linc and  get the one from Squadron. But I wouldn't be saving that much after i paid for the shipping back to Hobby Linc. I already figure I got a good deal on it from Hobby Linc's discounts

So now its a case of live and learn.

But thank you anyway Wayne

buy iy in case you screw up the first one. i'm sure down the raod you could sell it for the same proce you bought. i do that sometimes when the mystery deal is really good. picked uop an ASU-85 and swapped it for a modern towed 155 and got the hobbybvoss modern us tank transporter for $54 including shipping. won't be selling that one.

Here is the packaging for George Peppard's "Blue Max" Pfalz D-III.

The instructions are very helpful for building the film version, complete with all its inaccuracies.

I've been laboring with the engine, which is loaded with flash and troubled by substantially misaligned molds, leaving lots of clean up.  In addition, it doesn't fit in the cowling without a lot of filing, fiddling and fitting.  This will not be a "shake-the-box" build.  The entire kit is overly endowed with flash, actually.

I'll post some photos when I have something worthwhile to post.  In the meantime, a couple of "Max Facts," which I hope to continue through the build, if there are enough interesting facts out there.

1.  The film “The Blue Max” is based on the first of three novels (The Blue Max was published in 1964) written by Jack D. Hunter, following the exploits of Bruno Stachel from World War I through World War II.  The film was released in 1966.

Which leads to "Max Fact" number 2:

2.  Contrary to the film, Lt. Stachel does not die while testing a new aircraft in the latter days of WWI.  In fact, he does not die at all.

It's been enjoyable seeing everyone else's progress so far.  Nice work, guys!

Nothing much to report, except I've decided on a plan for the lighting of the USS Enterprise kit.  Nothing fancy, just a judicious use of reflective tape and paint.  Found a nice build showing a model done this way and it looks quite good.  No wiring or expensive LED systems for this one.

I've been cleaning and fitting parts, and the model has so many  bad joins that I just shake my head.  This is going to need a lot of filler and glue.  Sad  I'm going to need Mr. Surfacer by the gallon!

No pictures this go around.  Maybe when I've got something worth showing progress wise...

Gary

PS> Checkmateking02, that's a nice looking Pfalz.  The paint scheme should be interesting.

CMK2: here's an interesting Blue Max fact for you....On a blackboard in Kettering's office in the film you can see the squadron's name and number, Jasta 11. This was actually the name and number of Von Richtofen's Circus.

I hadn't noticed that.  MvR was probably in command of JG 1 by that time, and Jasta 11 was part of it.  So it must have been a blooper when he asked Bruno to join his unit.

Nice catch, Pyrman.  Thanks for bringing it up.

Everything looks like it's moving along, albeit slow for some. My Halftrack came in today. I didn't have a chance to do anything with it. but I'll get some pics tomorrow, guess I should say later on today Geeked

It was slow going on my end as I didn't have my kit, but it should go better now.

CMK - Yea I think so, But I have the motor almost done. After I get some paint on it. I'll post a pic or two. I was looking at the directions today noticed the tracks are made up of 56 links for each side. At the moment, I'm not sure if each link is 1 peice or 2 peices. I've never done any armor. So this is going be a real learning experience. Geeked

Wayne - The links by themselves may require that amount of time LOL

For a while now, I haven't had much to do. I had to put aside my P 47 Bubbletop as I entered it into "Operation Overlord GB"

What have I got myself into??????????? LOL Indifferent

Thank guys

Looks like your going to have a lot of fun with that Ken.

If you join more GB's, you will always have something to build Wink And don't worry, I hardly ever get to start my builds on day 1 of a GB. Always catching up.

Well, some of us are lucky enough to have a rather large selection. If for no other reason than it makes joining GB's easier.

That's my excuse.

i am set for a duckhunter, stuka and halfttrack build.

These are the voyages...

Captain's Build Log, Stardate 1305.18.  The USS Enterprise, Constitution Class Starship, Space Registry NCC-1701 has been moved into spacedock (my desk) for assembly.  Clean-up and fitting has begun, and though the parts are all there, the preliminary assessment is that "she's got more mis-matches than my aunt's wardrobe".  Our Chief Engineer can only shake his head and walk away, but I'm confident that he can, with patience (and some duct tape) get her into shape.

Yes, this model really is rather "warped".  Not badly enough that parts cannot be forced into position, but it's going to take tape and Tenax to hold her together.  You can see some of the spots in the second photo.  I'm not sure if it's due to the age of the model, or if it came this way from the manufacturer.  Probably a bit of both.  A more modern model from Polar Lights would have solved this problem, but, hey!  That's what modeling is all about.  Adapting and over-coming.  Yeah.  That's what I tell myself.  Tongue Tied  Meanwhile, I've got more stuff expected for the build, and it's going to be "make it up as I go along" sort of journey.

Hey everyone,

Gary - She'll come together.Looks good so far.

Now my Halftrack; I pulled everything out of the box and the plastic bags to let it soak over night, I'm still having problems with mold release. Any how there is actually more parts than it looks upon opening the boxIndifferent. Are all trumpeter kits like that?

And,,,,,,, This one is going to take a while Big Smile Like you said Gary, Thats what modeling is all about. LOL One never knows what their getting into when opening the box.

Major Reisman will be over seeing this build. but I also have to watch so the prisoners don't escape. The worst one is Victor Franko. You really have to watch him. Then there is A J Maggot (what a name) This one is completely off his rocker. LOL

I think I have so far bought 2 kits just to enter a GB. I try to avoid it, but sometimes you just can't help yourself.

Sounds like your going to have a busy time ahead. I blame those nasty people coming up with GB's you just can't resist. Big Smile

hey bish

i agree. those people who think about GB toipics certainly aren't nice folks.

this year i bought 2 kits for the fire fighting GB because i had the fire trucker ordered prior and it just sounded interesting, the HOLLYWOOD was a 2 sub set because the closest think i had was an FFG which i was building as a short hull and the one REUBEN JAMES in the movie is a long hull. i think that's it. as you and i have discussed, we have eclectic stashes. i could even do a space and a sci fi if it wasn't to specific.

i just reviewed the rules and i could do my BABYLON 5 space station

Hey Bish,

I try and use GBs to motivate me to build something out of the stash, but if there's one that comes up that I don't have anything for, I use it as an excuse to buy another one.

I made a start on the Batmobile yesterday, I'll try and post some pics tonight.

Cheers

The Encore "Blue Max" Pfalz is a definite problem child.  Every piece has to be test fitted, filed, sanded, re-tested in order to obtain a modicum of fit.  In fact, it's giving me fits.

I have assembled the engine and the fuselage, and will post some pictures after I have regained some sobriety.

Here's my bat-progress.

Removed some parts from the sprue, cleaned them up. Joined most of the body components, but still some cleanup required.

Removed the AMT/ERTL Chrome, and will refinish. At this pint, there's still some junk on the parts, they need a good scrub.

Cheers

Just like Stachel himself???  No wonder he drank.

Anyway, here's some photos.  I managed to get the engine together, to the point where it will actually fit in the cowling.  It had to be thinned down so the little pipes could actually reach and be glued to the cylinders.

Then I worked on getting the fuselage together.  The flash on the tail was easy to remove, but you can see how the pieces were loaded with it.

The bottom of the fuselage had a ridge to it, and I had some difficulty determining how much to remove.  I ended up filing and sanding it back to the (sort of) flat area, since I think that's where the wings will best attach.

The rear wall of the cowl in front of the cockpit also had some ambiguous looking flash.  I ended up sanding that back to the flat area too.

But then test fitting revealed that the cowl doesn't fit too well anyway.

Perseverance.  Persistence.  I think with a lot of gap-filling superglue and sanding, an acceptable model can still be made.  At least, that's what I am telling myself right now.

Thanks for looking!
