John R, thanks for the tips. I appreciate all the tips I can get.
RR, thanks for the tip on the grass. I'll be on the lookout for it next time I'm in the LHS.

Ok.

For the grass, try some woodland scenics Static grass. It will give the base a more realistic appearance and I am sure you'd be more satisfied with it.
the road looks pretty good, and like you said some bigger rocks would look good.
you can try kittly litter and railroad ballast for that.
the base adds a little bit more interest than just a plane model i think.
thanks for posting the pics!

QUOTE: With your base, what did you use for grass?
Did you mix it in with the batch of sculptamold?
And last one, was the sculptamold painted after it dried?

I used Woodland Scenics Green fine turf.
I did not mix it in with the sculptamold.
First I mixed some cheap acrylic paint in with the sculptamold as I was mixing it up. I used a light brown, but next time I'd use something darker. Then I spread Woodland Scenics fine Buff ballast over the whole base, then I sprinkled some medium ballast on the road way. Next time I'd also throw in some coarse ballast to get some bigger stones and rocks. I put down the grass, then painted the roadway a mixture of Tamiya Flat Earth and Desert Yellow. I lightened with more Desert Yellow and put in some faint streaks, and then with white, and lightly misted it. Finally drybrushed the road with a mix of Humbrol matt earth and trainer yellow. Petbat's directions are here:

jratz, I thought the dust showed up a little better. You can see the splotches best from the rear, on the rear hull plate between the tracks. It's faint in the pics, but it's there. The running gear were washed with black artists waters, but you're right. It needed to be thicker, with some powders or pastels thrown in for some grimy texture. Thanks a bunch for the tips. Everytime I look at the pics, the rusted parts seem to get brighter and brighter, and yet up close they look far flatter.

Nice job buff, I always have the same problem when I'm doing tracks and as mine is going in the desert I think the most I'm going to do is a light rust wash.

Buff:

Great write-up !! The whole point to these GB's is to learn (IMHO) and you obviously got a lot of of this one !!!

Like the tank also. I think you already said what I had in mind. I'm having trouble seeing your "dust" anywhere but on the top deck, maybe needs a tad more around the running gear ? And maybe I'd wash the springs & road wheels just a bit heavier ?

Good work ....

Great looking Churchill!!! The OD looks realy realistic. If I could find something to constructivly criticise you on I would, but i cant!
Great build!

You can go ahead and take the badge off of my sig if you want.

With your base, what did you use for grass?
Did you mix it in with the batch of sculptamold?
And last one, was the sculptamold painted after it dried?

Here are pics of my finished Tamiya Churchill Mk VII. I enjoyed it. Not a bad kit at all despite it's age. It went together well, with a minimun of puttying and sanding. The kit is OOB except for the antennas ( 020 brass rod) and the tow cables which were accurate armor WW2 British mated to the kit hooks. The attachment points were scratchbuilt. Thanks to all who helped with tips and advice, especially Peter for the tutorial on his base. I copied most of what you did because, first you know what you're doing with bases, and I don't, and second, I needed to plunk my tank down in Normandy anyways. Thanks again
I think it basically turned out allright. There are a some minor paint flaws, and I think I overdid the rust on the tracks, particularly the bits on the inside of the tracks that are visible. I painted it with Tamiya. The washes are artists' water colours. The first wash was black, and the second was sepia. I drybrushed with Tamiya, but it dries too quickly for me to get it right. Next time, back to artists' oils. A couple of bursts of Tamiya Matt Earth mixed with Desert Yellow for dust finished it off. I used those colors for the dirt road too.
The base is only the second one I've done. I think I did well with the road although next time I'll use some coarse ballast to get some bigger stones and rocks. I also need to make the track marks a little wider so that the tank sits down a little more. I guess the Sculptamold shrinks when it dries. I'm not particularly happy with the grass. I needed to pay closer attention to getting rid of the lumps in the Sculptamold, and to getting the grass to sit down a little better. Still better than the first one, and that was the goal.

Any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated, Don't be shy.
Happy New Years to all. BTW, who is hosting the badge?

Well mines almost ready for paint, I got stuck on stupid though and will have to fix the sub turret which I built backwards and didnt notice it til today. This will also be the first model I will try preshading on first before I shoot the main so wish me luck. It is pretty much OOB exept for the front fenders which I shaved and put in flatter ones. I couldn't find any aftermarket track's for this but after I saw the price for the Panther one's I also wanted to get I decided to stick with the rubber bands which arn't all that bad but I'll have to tie them down for sag. This was actually a very nice kit in my opinion, and I'm looking forward to trying out there hetzer kit (though I'm going to try a lot of photoetch on it) http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/1003/cplchilly/?action=view¤t=484bba16.jpg

Nice progress everyone.
I finally dusted off the airbrush and applied my basecoat last night. I decided to with a variation of Tamiya Khaki, preshaded with flat black, and the panels lightened with a Khaki-white-buff mix.
Everything was basecoated and has been left overnight to dry. Tonight I'll get to applying the wash, and maybe start some detail painting.

Being a knewbie, is anyone willing to explain the concept of GB's.
I've particually replyed to this thread as I'm interested in WW2 British armour. And for those who are interested, I have built the Tamiya Matilda II in 1/35, just completed a conversion of Tamiya's 1/35 Matilda II to a Matilda I (A12) and currently building Tamiya's Cromwell IV and Italeri's Crusader III. I would have posted my Matilda images but don't know how.

A GB is supposed to finish on the the set date but very few people meet the deadline, or at least meet it for each GB they enter, so we are all pretty flexible on that. Seeing as you are still building the Cromwell and Matilda, you can hop in on this one.

To post pics you need to upload them to a site that allows picture linking. Ron, one of the regulars here at the FSM Forum has provided space for FSM related pics. Here is a thread how to do this:
http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10017

Ron periodically sweeps the site to keep space available so if you want to control that you need to set up your own free site with one of the many providers like -www.photobucket.com. Just follow their prompts. Note: Places like Yahoo do not allow direct linking of pics to other sites and all you will get is a red 'X' if you try to use them as your host site.

Once you have the pics uploaded then you need to follow the steps in this thread to post them into your discussion box:
http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4462

Welcome aboard...if you are interested that is.

Go back & look at 1st message in this thread, or any other GB. Usually you will find some criteria framing the topic/theme of the build, a start date & an end date.

The whole idea is some like-minded folks building to some theme within a certain date range. And of course, post progress, discuss your build, comment on others, etc, and just kind of have a good time and learn something. At the end of all this, you will be able to display a group badge in your signature.

The GB starts when someone gets a weak moment & volunteers to honcho the thing such as making decisions on what is allowable within the GB -- for example, in this one, some of us forgot the SAS jeep wasn't Brit/C'wealth designed & built & the sponsor disallowed them. Some sponsors have, at the end, set up websites to display all entries, etc. It varies by sponsor & the folks participating.

Some folks build a single model, some build many, it depends.

You cannot "enter" a previously built model -- the idea is to build during the given time frame.

They can be fun & in the right build, you can learn and/or contribute.

Congrats on getting your qualifications John.

The build is looking absolutely fantastic. The slope would need more work on the cab rear and doors, but I think it looks great as is. Looking forward to seeing more.

Have a good Christmas and safe New Year.

When last I appeared, I was about to correct the cab, which I decided was about 1/8" too high. That proved to be a chore as one change lead to another change to another, but I finally got to a point where I was reasonably happy. But it took a long time because I had to be careful to not really screw things up.

Plus, I had to take time to finish my getting my Private Pilot Certificate, all of which happened this past weekend, so after 50-some years of wanting to be a pilot, I are one ....

Anyway, let me lead off with another reference picture so you get an idea of what I have been shooting for. Again, many of my detail pictures do not match these particular vehicles, but these are what I want, so I am having to kludge my way thru.

Anyway, I chopped most the molded on frame from under the cab to lower it a bit more than 1/8". Once I did that, it became obvious the cab was a bit too far back -- the wheels & fenders didn't look quite right. So I moved the cab forward a bit over 1/16". That required rework of the engine compartment, frame, and a couple other things, not to mention pulling the steps & fuel tanks off. Originally my steps & tanks were roughly attached in/at the points on the Italeri frame, but now I had to sand all them off/down & re-attach the steps & tanks forward. This turned out very well & not only did I fix the height & location of the cab, but also was able to make a better fit of the steps & tanks. Yeah, maybe it isn't obvious from previous pictures, but I know it wasn't right ....

Another bennie is that I gained that 1/16" to lengthen the bed. I didn't actually lengthen anything, but by moving the cross-ways bed forward, I uncluttered the winch & leg area, so it was all for the best.

As all the above was happening, I continued to work on the ammo box which sits up on the deck and also started the storage boxes on each side of the vehicle -- I still haven't done doors either. I also replaced the wire "hinges" which allowed the gun carriage legs to pivot with a real nice hinge made from a cut-down tailor's pin.

Rather than several detail pix, here are two views of progress to-date:

I can put more work into this now, at least until family shows for the Holidays. Before I proceed, there are two more areas that need fixing. I now think the rear platform is too narrow & I'm going to add a plank on each side. The other problem is that the cab is too "square" from the top -- you can see from the photos how the cab obviously slants inward toward the front. I've done what I can with that and cannot do anymore without a major setback.

Happy Holidays to all !!!!!
John
