Hi Everyone,
I've finished my Tamiya V-1 Doodlebug. It was painted with Tamiya Aerosols, which are very smooth as you can see. As these were 'one use' aeroplanes, I've gone for a 'factory fresh' look. Apologies for the lack of in progress photos, but I've had a few other priorities lately that have kept me away from the main business. Hope you like it. It's a really easy kit to build, as you would expect from the Big 'T'. I wish they'd get on with releasing some more 1/48 aircraft.

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Looks good Tony, nice little build. The big T seems to have abandoned Aircraft while they focus their resources on the new 1/48 Armor kits. Hope they do something new soon.

well got started on some of the decals yesterday while I spray painted the rest of the parts that were still on the trees i will try to get a few pics of the decals that I put on the devastator before I put more on. And somehow I lost the arrestor hook outside when I brought the plane in from the garage last night so I may just try not to replace it afterward but maybe it will show up when I go back out and look again.

X1 is out of the paint shop...from here on out it will be brush work. It is the Tamiya 1/72. Good kit. There is one issue...the fuselage "point" that is above the pit comes as a seperate point. Did not like the fit. That was my only "problem". What is really exciting is that I think I nailed the right orange off the bat!

The Tamiya orange was too pale...a few drops of Testor Acryill red and whamo...the correct (or by my eye and photos of the real deal at Air & Space) orange.

Next will be a polishing with a paint polish to knock down the orange peel (no puns intended). It has been very humid here of late and I think this helped it along.

I sincerely appreciate all criticism...

Looking good, Joe!

The color looks pretty good! Hope your paint polish removes the orange peel effect - let us know how it goes. Let's hope you won't have to re-paint.

Joe, It looks like you nailed the orange color, very convincing. As far as the orange peel goes, I think it would speed things up if you carefully sand out the bumps, then follow up with polish. Polish alone will require alot of elbow grease. I almost always buff the entire model with a fine sanding stick before the final clear coat. Just make sure you don't get too aggressive and sand thru your color coat.

Lookin good joe,

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT .....go browns

well I had a little problem with a hand powered hand drill and put a little hole in the wing. Well I fixed it the best I could and covered it over with some paint.

OK, the P-40N that was originally slated for this GB is done…. finished photos in the Warhawk GB thread. Work shall now start on the Yak-7 for this GB. I have started looking for profile drawings on the web to see if the wings are really almost devoid of panel lines? So far the one I have found show the wings in the ICM kit are correct, or close to it. Any Russian experts out there? Where the wings wood on this plane by any chance?

Hey Nut!

There is a fantastic web site for Soviet Aircraft of the Great Patriotic War...can not remember it though,,,Banged Head [banghead] Try a Google with Aircraft of the Great Patriotic War or try these very forums, it is in here I know...I am a huge fan of the Yak3, in this model there were wood wings. Most Yaks of that time had quite a few wood components...

OK, I clipped the cockpit pieces off the sprues!! I hope to have the whole cockpit finished by monday. Today will be sparing RLM 02 (and stopping myself from adding scratchbuilt detail) and detail painting. Tomorrow morning will be coat of future. Tomorrow evening or Sunday morning will be the wash.

I think I've solved my problem with the color Yellow. The problem with these lighter colors is that I don't get the uniform coverage I want. Particularly with MM colors and acrylics. Tamiya paints on the other hand go on very uniform in one (sometimes two) coat(s). However, the accuracy of Tamiya colors to FS.595a/595B standards is less accurate than Tim Wakefield knuckleball in March. To address my problem with Yellow, I'm using an approach I used with White on some of my other models.

1) I use Tamiya Flat Yellow XF-3 as a primer. One or two coats should suffice.
2) Spray on MM Chrome Yellow. Again, will have to see if it takes one or two coats.

My hunch is that the flat Tamiya colors give some teeth for the more FS.595a/595B accurate MM Acryls to adhere to, and there for go on more "uniformly". This is particularly important when painting over an NMF.

I put the primer (Tamiya XF-3 Flat Yellow) on my XF5F-1 Skyrocket five minutes ago. Will let ya'll know how it all comes out in the end. So far so good, we have have "uniformity".

Quagmyre, how did the yellow come out? Let's see some pix!

I've made some more progress this weekend on my quarter-scale Tamiya Razorback. I posted the cockpit pix on page 6 in the original GB topic (http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=33346), if you're interested.

I've gotten the engine finished - here it is:

I painted the cylinders MM aluminum (aluminium??), and then used a heavy wash to highlight the cooling fins. The reduction box is Tamiya AS-7 Neutral Gray, which I'll also use for the lower wings and fuselage. I picked out some bolts on the reduction box to try to highlight them. And I DID remember to include the nylon bushing so the prop will stay on once it's done.

All constructive comments & suggestions are appreciated...

Nice job on the radial! I'll have to check out your CP pics. My PFEIL is coming along slowly but surely. The fuse is closed and I'm cleaning up some seams. I should be painting soon. Looks great so for Dave! Big Smile [:D]

got more done. Some more decals on the aircraft (had a small problem accidentaly lost one of the code decals that say 5-T-1 so I actually went and replaced it with some dry transfer decals) painted the engine cowl assembled the engine and installed it into the cowl painted the nose of the Torpedo and then did the painting of the wing interior framework that will show when I have the wings in the folded position. BTW I also had to repaint the one remaining kit decal because the colors of the 5 and the 1 were blue instead of black like on the box art and reference photos (what I meant was the decals were supposed to be black not blue). I may try to do the tail numbers tommorow after I get some pics.

The X1 is all painted and touched up...I did knock down the orange peel. Now just brush painting details and need to decal. Will be a while though. On vacation next week and the preparations i.e.packing, will take up most of my time...
