Looks pretty sweet Marc! Can't wait to see it with some decals. What paints/mixes did you end up using?

Razordws-it is the ICM Yak-7D in 1/48. Needs to be worked… does not fall together like the Hase kits. Fit isn’t bad in most places but a lot of work opening ports and scoops etc and thinning radiator walls and LG cover to scale them down took a lot of time.

Lt. Zogg- Went with MM Russian Topside green, underside blue and the black, to complete the tractor scheme, I ended up with MM flat black and lightened it a bit with some of the underside blue

And thanks to all for the kind words.

Finished...Party [party]

1/72 Scale Tamiya Bell X1

It may look a bit weird, it is still wet with future in the photograph...

Fun build, typical Tamiya fit...decals were a bit on the rough side though...

Nice addition to have for my collection...

Comments always welcome...

Great job, Joe! It's always nice to take one off the bench and put it on the shelf.

I've made some progress on the Razorback: completed the landing gear assemblies, the flaps, added the wings and stabs to the fuselage, and painted the cowling. Soon it'll be ready for primer and then painting. I'll post pics when there's something to see.

Nice work Joe. This was Tamiya's first 1/72 kit released, but it wasn't actually tooled by Tamiya. They bought the mold from a defunct Company, Mania I believe. But in any case, it's close to Tamiya quality.

Dave, Dave and Rick...(sounds like a sit com line up LOL)

Thanks for the look...Rick, did not know this was a rebox. The one "weird" thing about the kit was the pit. Where the fuselage comes to a point ofer the windscreen Mania did not continue the halves. What the did is stopped about an 1/8" inch short and then added the pointed piece as a seperate component...strange.

This was the only thing that was "wrong" with the kit. I looked this am at some internet stuff on the X1 and I now have doubts as to the accuracy of the Tamiya suggestions...then again I could always break out my copy of The Right Stuff tonight and check that out Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Joe, the really strange thing about researching the X-1 is how different the color looks in different pics. The color film of the actual record breaking flight has it looking bright red in some scenes & bright yellow in others. I think International Orange was the actual color for the exterior & Interior Green or Green Zinc Chromate for internals. At least that's how I did the 1/48 Eduard kit when I built it several years ago.

Nice X1 Joe.....you've given me some inspiration to build one. Got any orange paint left?

My Dornier is coming along nicely. I'm spraying the final camo color now. Will post pics soon.

Rick,

The one thing that I was really pleased with was the color...hand mixed. From the bulk of my references I think I got it. But as you said there seems to be one shade for every three photos you see. One thing for sure the Tamiya orange suggested was way too light.

In regards to the interior the suggested color was gray. I am a bit skeptical of this suggestion as it contradicts the norm at the time which was Green Zinc Chromate as the "universal" US Military aircraft.

So then that brings up a question, was this a truly military project, it was part of the NACA and owned by Bell.

Dragonfly...you need orange, you know the Browns' orange may be just what is needed for the X1...LOL

My entry to the Out Of the Box GB is complete. A Yak-7DI of the 43rd IAP flown by Sr. Lt. V. Merkulov. This is really OOB… down to the marking. I didn’t even go to my small stash of 3” pieces of sprue do stretch for the antennae. I made sure I used a piece from this kit. The only research I did was on the tractor scheme, once it was pointed out that “black” was not a typo (much appreciated Rick). I took a ride on the coat tales of others and in the hope that their research is accurate. Whether it is or it ain’t… here she is.

Marc,

Nice build! The weathering and decals made the finished product really jump! You should see if Tanky will allow that in the Planes of the Red Star Group Build.

Thanks all. It was fun working on this. I am doing a Tamiya Spit MkV now. What a difference... only a couple of hours into it and the pit is in, fusleage sanded and rescribed wings on... the build is really flying. I didn't really just sayt hat did IClown [:o)]?

Joe:
As I sat applying an aftermarket mask to the canopy last night, I wondered if that's within the rules of the GB. Is it? Please advise... I didn't get too far, so I won't be TOO disappointed if it's not "legal."

Thanks!

Here are some pix of my progress on the Tamiya Razorback in 1/48.

You can see in the last photo that I had some trouble closing the seam in front of the cockpit... and I can see that there's a gap at the rear, too.

Next up, I'm going to attach the flaps, wash the model to get rid of my greasy fingerprints, and put on a coat of primer. Then I can see where I need to fix any more of my seams...

,,,oh yeah, and continue with the EZ Masking! (thanks, Joe).

As always, I appreciate constructive criticism!

Happy modeling!
