Darren, my holidays started really bad but ended pretty well. First my unlce passed away (no worries, the family was expecting it, he had failing health for a whileSad [:(])
Then my car dies ($1000+ later...Angry [:(!]Dead [xx(]Banged Head [banghead]) . I fixed and re-finished our deck. We also went to Edmonton (300 kms north of Calgary) 3 separate times then My wife went a fourth time as her sister just gave birth to a healthy bouncing baby boy! All in the space of 16 days ! Black Eye [B)]

Needless to say with all the traveling, there was no time for modeling but as I said before I got three new kits for my B-day!

I'm totally back into the swing of things, my Canadian GB warm-up build (Beaufighter) is coming along nicely, I posted some pics of it in the Canadian GB. Last night I put the fuselage together. I think I'll need more putty!! The fit is pretty horrible but I guess that's what I get with airfix eh?

BTW you are all still invited to join the Canadian GB, just over one month till it kicks off! Party [party]

Jay - no offense intended... Darren and I were worrying Kremps had another her famous shin digs and didn't invite us... sorry to hear about your loss, but the birth is a good thing! I am kicking myself for not buying the 1/32 F4U with RCAF markings the other day at Hobby Lobby... 50% off!!! I'll try to fit something in there, I should be done with the FW 190 soon!

Darren... I posted it on the NA GB a bit back... I got it at the LAST 50% off sale at the craft store and it was bugging me sitting in the closet all alone with all the Commonwealth and US aircraft...

so far just some minor sub assemblies done but have pics and will be posting them in the NAGB as Karl wants to see them... the Hasegawa 1/32 FW190 A8 is a really nice build by the way... it's ease of assembly rivals the Tamiya F4F, but it is more detailed... if you think of doing one I recommend at LEAST the cutting edge seat...

Jay Sounds like you've had a bi of a rollercoaster couple of weeks, glad to hear it's all settling down now though.

You have to love Airfix..............what do you mean you don't? I always think Airfix kits are like scratch building by stealth, you don't know what you've got yourself into until it's too late, and by then you're already committed!

Tom The MDC pit for the 190 is a work of art, I'd definitly out that on my shopping list if I end up building the Hasa 1/32 kit. Not sure it it's available in the US, it's made by a tiny outfit in the UK, a one man and his dog job, but such quality. See link below;

Karl - that does look good!!! I plan on getting an AM cockpit for the next one... I just got the cutting edge seat for the one I am building for speeds sake as this and other GB's are coming up. (plus I just had to be me and build something on my own for a change!) Wink [;)]

Tom I saw the MDC pit an a magazine build of the 190D a while back. The article had the kit pit and the MDC one built side by side, and the difference was very noticeable. It's not that the Hasa pit is bad, it isn't, it's just that the MDC pit is even better.

I know what you mean about non-GB builds. I've really enjoyed the 109D because therehave been no time constraints, just working on it when I feel like it. That's not to say I don't enjoy the GBs though!

So I'll be doing an fw-190d9 100% for sure. I was at the LHS and picked up a 1:72 decal set for 5 different d9's in reich defense. Cool! for 7$ CDN you can't go wrong. Now I gotta wait! Tongue [:P]

Jay Which 1/72 kit are you going with? Are you going Airfix again, or have you come to your senses and opted for the Academy kit, which bar the decals is supposed to be excellent?

Popped into the Canadian GB just now. Looks like you're making good progress on that Beau.

Grimlock Welcome to the GB.

Uh... airfix? Actually I looked at the academy kit and chose the Airfix. Censored [censored] Oh well! I found a review where a guy totally reworked the airfix fw-190d kit and displayed it along with a tamiya dora. It looked very good! I think I'll be printing off that review and following his methods closely. I see the biggest problem is the raised panel lines. Maybe i'll have a go at rescribing. I've never tried it. Maybe this is a good one to try. I also have the airfix blenheim and will definetly have to rescribe on that one. The rivets are so huge The scale makes them about the size of my fist!Shock [:O]

Check out the Tamiya and Airfix dora review on MM

Daniel - I finally found the scheme I like for the FW-190, I was going to do the standard splinter/mottle camo of the late war until I found this... the decals in the kit actually will fit in exactly with this pic (except for markings of Hannes Trautloft as Geschwader Commander, the pic does not denote his markings correctly) ... this looks like a challenge for me in the weathering dept as I have never done a white anything... I'll have to go buy that set of grey scale pastels tomorrow as I think those lighter colors will fit right in... actually I may go to the big LHS and check through their decals for the exact markings for the plane....

anyway here's the pic:

I really like the look of some of those FW-190's used on the eastern front. I'm planning on doing one of the white ones one day, and the dark green ones are pretty cool too.

For JG 54 aircraft, I really like the field applied multi-colored schemes. For the White birds, check your references carefully. Many were just given a temporary & somewhat crudely applied White Wash, but some of the FW-190's intended for the Eastern Front were actually factory painted in a semi-gloss White enamel & appeared far less weathered than the temporary schemes.

Tanky I haven't built either, but I know the Hasa kit is fairly old, while the Academy kit is relatively new and supposed to the best of the breed in 1/72. Not sure if anyone has compared with the Tamiys offering though. See link below:

www.modelingmadness.com/scotts/axis/luft/fw/190/a190dpreview.htm

Sounds like there isn't much between the Tamiya and Academy kits, apart from price.

Jay I'm starting to think you're suffering from 'Airfixation', an almost incurable addiction that leads the aflicted to repeatedly spend their money on mediocre British kits from the 70's. Please tell me this isn't so?

Joking aside, at least this is a smal project, so the amount of work required should not be too onerous. Either that, or you splash for the Academy offering, after all you don't want to waste those lovely AM decals!!!Wink [;)]

Tom Nice choice on the Fw190 camo! The winter white wash scheme should prove a challenge.

I've built the Has kit. Yes, it is old but is still a fairly nice kit. The cocpit is typical of the older Has offerings: not much detail, decal instuments, few parts. the only other thing is that the wheel wells are solid, not cut away to show the engine like on real Fock-Wolfs.
Then again, all 1/72 Fw-190s have the solid bays.

That won't be a problem. my langnasen is getting the aires detail set. cockpit, control surfaces, gunbays, engine the whole lot.

Sorry, I need to change my subjects, since I goofed and misread the start time. Instead I will be doing a late Jagdpanther and a Shturmovik. Chuck Confused [%-)]Dunce [D)]

grimlock welcome to the build, it's nice to see another piece of soviet armor being done for the build, what kit are you going to use?
Oh and btw, do you have a first name that you wouldn't mind sharing with the group?

JB I have to agree with Karl, why you do it to yourself. The results you get from these old kits are excellent but there must be an easier way.

Tom ahhh yes the fatal words "I was going to do the standard splinter/mottle camo of the late war until I found this..." Tongue [:P] Good luck on this one and now I'm really looking forward to some progress pics.

hernando welcome to the build and you are right, the timeframe gives us all some thinking time.

Chuck no probs I'll update page 1.

Cheers

Ok fellas, I'm languishing a little in research details for this GB now that we have some dates to go buy.

Would anyone happen to have pics or details of either Mk 9 Spits, or P-51A's that suit the time frame??????
'Cause I'm having a hell of a time finding any details on squadrons or even individual planesAshamed [*^_^*]

Have a look at this site mate:

http://wp.scn.ru/en/news

There's hundreds of Spitfire and Mustang profiles there. Alot of them say the dates and locations where they were used. If you find one you like and it tells you what squadron/fighter group it was from, go to one of these sites and see if there's photos of it:

http://www.web-birds.com/
www.littlefriends.co.uk

hope you can find something there.

Sean I have some spare decals for a MK.IXe (MK392) flown by Wing Commander J.E. Johnnie Johnson of No. 127 Wing during January 1945 from Eindhoven, Holland . The camo is Dark Green/Ocean Grey over Medium Sea Grey with a black spinner.
If you want them they are yours.

I guess I got a bunch of Airfix kits before I realized how much work they are. Oh well. I really hate to get rid of the models as I really want to build them. I really enjoy building them and adding in my own detail. Maybe given time, I'll learn. Thanks for the support!

Jay Misery loves company, I just bought an Airfix Gloster Meteor. It's the only kit of the Mark III that I am aware of in 1/72. I'm thinking of maybe doing that and the Me 262 for the battle of Germany GB.

Daniel, thats a really cool website. Someone did a lot of searching on the internet for those profiles!

Tweety, if you want a p-51A, check out that profile website that Daniel linked to and check out the mustnags then the ones from Canada, There is one 430 sdn RCAF from the time frame for this build.
