Yup...1/72, the old Revell Dam Buster kit...got the resin conversion for it recently...

Darson, put me down for a 1/72 "Grand Slam/Tall Boy Lancaster 617 Squadron...And that is it for Group Builds this year, until Black Wolf come with the Aces of the 8th GB (plan to do a dio/vignette for that one!Tongue [:P])

Nick a P-51 would be perfect for the build.

Jay I really like the map, but it reminds me more of the openting credits to Dads Army than the World at War.

Cheers

I will do either the Hase MkVIII Spit with the CMK engine detail kit, or the Acc Min P-51A OOB, unless I can find some P-51A detail kitsBig Smile [:D]

Hi all,
this sounds like it will be a fun GB. count me in as well. since there is 6 months until the start, I'll have plenty of time to decide what to build and to finish up the other GBs.

Sean, just curious-on your P-51A , what decals are you using? I have the Acc. Min. P-51A in my 'to build' stash, but the decals are for the China-Burma-India theater.

Thanks

Bob

Fernando, Geoff & Jimmy welcome to the group build guys. I've put down your builds on the first page, but as we are a fair way out from starting if you change your minds about the build or participating, just let me know.

Jay I sent you two emails on the weekend containing the two parts of the article on conifers. If you didn't get them let me know.

Sean, any thoughts on maybe a Spit with Invasion Stripes, that would look cool.

Cheers

[b[Bob I haven't done much research on the P-51A as yet, but there has to be something to suit the era.
I was leaning more towards the Spit to be honest, cause I haven't got one in my collection yet.

Darren[/b] A Spit with stripes eh?
Might have to look into that cause it would look extremely cool!!
Do you know of any MkVIII Spits with invasion stripes??

Sean, you will mainly see Mk.IX Spits with invasion stripes on. You could use the very tasty Hase Mk.IX and combine it with some Eaglestrike decals.

Jay, no problems at all.

Nah, I'll stick too the MkVIII for now.
I plan to get a few more Spits after I reduce my stash pile a bit anyways, so a IX is on the 'to do' list.

I've seen pics of a Mk.Vb with invasion stripes on it too. It was one that served with the US navy and flew missions over Normandy. There probably were Mk.VIII's with stripes, you just have to find them.

Sean - could find no specific mention of VIII's flying in invasion stripes but one. It was in German so I couldn't tell you the specifics on it... According to the site I found on RAF units in DDay everything BUT the MkVIII flew. (Although the MkVII flew... wierd huh???)

I did find that both my Martlet (Wildcat by that time) and the Avenger flew in support of DDay as well with FAA and the RCAF.

interesting site with lots of info:

http://www.raf.mod.uk/dday/rafu.html

---edit---

just realized that these were the aircraft that actually flew on invasion day, may have been Mk.VIII's afterward.

We're glad to have you here Nick.

John, welcome to the build mate.

Tom and Sean, the Mk.VIII Spit was produced in 1942 as a stop gap measure until the Mk.IX became available. It was an outstanding success but was basically replaced with frontline UK Squadrons in 1943. It was then exported to Nth Africa, India, Australia etc to replace the Mk.Vc.
The main Spitfire marks to see combat over Normandy and beyond were the Mk.IXs, Mk.XIIs and Mk.IVs.

Cheers

Sean Here's a Spit Mk.VIII with invasion stripes for you. It's finished in the High altitude day fighter scheme of medium sea-grey upper surfaces over PRU blue underside. Type 'B' roundel on fuselage side and sky-grey code letters.

And here's another interesting Mk.VIII used in Italy during '44. It's a USAAF aircraft from the 31st FG, 309th FS:

Only problem is trying to find decals for them. Hope it gives you some ideas.

I'd love to get in on this one mate! I think I'll build a Panther, the Night fighting one by DML, don't quite know the variant, but I see it at the LHS all the time, so I'll pick one up soon enough and shove it in the closet!

Welcome aboard Patrick, a night fighting Panther sounds like a great idea. I think we're going to get some really cool and varied aircraft and vehicles out of this build.

Cheers

Thanks for the info guysBig Smile [:D]
Might have to do a tedious Squadron search to see who and what were involved in the invasion of Germany.
I cannot beleive that VIII's weren't involved, but like alot of things, finding them is the hard part.
