So, I was hoping to have my Br 20M done before this group build started but I'm a little behind.  Why you ask?  Ever tried peeling scotch tape (canopy masking) off that has been stuck to something for over two years...   Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]

Canopies are now a mess.  I'll do what I can to make it presentable but at this point I just want to cut my losses and get it on the shelf. Disapprove [V]

Yippee!!  The GB starts today!!  Which one will I start first?  Hmmmm.....I need time to think about it!Whistling [:-^]

Actually, I won't be able to do much modeling until next year!  Leaving Friday on a business/Xmas trip and won't return until the 28th.  When I get back I'm thinking of finishing the paint job on that M4A1 Sherman that's nearing completion!

Ok, I've had a look around and I've decided it is time to finish my 1/32 HH-43 Husky with the Cobra Company detail set. I started it a couple of years ago and have managed to not finish two different group builds with it. It is time to get it finished.

Dave, sorry to hear about the canopy.  Can you soak it in something?

Speacking of old tape.  The FW190 has had tape on the canopy since 1996, beat thatWink [;)]

Aaron, I update the roster with your Husky.  I had to look it up.  That is a very cool looking chopper.

Anybody out there building yet ?

Well I slacked off yesterday Whistling [:-^] But this morning I located all the parts for the Hawk Grumman Bearcat ..Remember those old Hawk kits ?  I wish I had a bunch more of them.. Anyway  - First thing I did was break off one of the landing gear struts. Sad thing they were not even glued in place. I drilled out the offending piece and drilled the strut for a piece of aluminum tubing to replace the broken tab.

Well I shook out the kit this morning, and the instructions were missing! Finally tracked them down on top of the spraybooth.

I started this one by sanding down the rivets on the major surfaces, which are very pronounced. Then I shelved it for a year. The aftermarket decals have continuous (I hope, as opposed to none!) carrier film, uuunnnnngggghhhh!

This is going to be a cool a/c I haven't built anything Lancasterish in a while. Like, the Revell Dambuster 40 years ago.

I plan to start, in a little while....

Bondo - Did you get started yet ?  I have one of those old "Dam Busters" with the Secret Bomb myself. Some day I will get to it...

Well I got the prop painted and gave it yellow tips, got the fuse painted and drying. I spent more time this morning looking for a different set of Decals for it, Wish I would of had some Navy in the right scale as I would have made this into a Blue Angel Bird..  But no luck so it will have to wear Marine logo's .

Graham, looking forward to seeing some more of the VW.  You putting the driver back in?

Sean, did you get any before pictures?

Bondo, that bomber looks very cool.  I don't think I have ever seen one before.

I have been busy most of the day.  I have some time for now.  First I will clean up the desk.  Will shelve the P-40 for now from the WEEK to WEEK GB (that's my name for the Weekend GB).  Dave mailed me some decals to finish it with.  Never again will I use the old Academy decals.  Thick is not the word, they are rubber.

I think I will start on my Bf109B for this GB.

or I may finish the P-40N

What do you guys think?

That's going to look great when she's finish.

OK Sean, your right the P-40N is sooo close to the finish I may as well do it first.  I noticed the Huey in the pic, is that the Monogram/Revell 1/48?  Matt has one also as do I.  I have the old Eduard decals plus some Superscale decals for it in the stash.

I started working on the RoG Ka-50, since it was mostly complete only to find that I have lost the instructions.  Not a major problem though because I have already completed the paint and decals, all that I really needed to do was add the armaments.  Oh and I have discovered that the left cockpit door has gone AWOL.  I did come up with an idea that helps to hide that fact though.  Will have some pics soon I hope.

Roy - Go with the P-40, it does feel good to get one of the incompletes off the shelf!!!

Ok, well here is what I started with

The detail of the kit is pretty sparse and the HH-43 has those huge windows, so the Cobra Company kit adds a lot to the build.

I got the cockpit and fuselage together when I left off

I'm wrapping up a couple of builds and then I'll get back to this one.

More then likely yes, It is Boxed by AMT but I have been discovered that they used other kits with their name.

This is where I am on the Bearcat - come tomorrow she will be a Marine ...

Bearcat 3 I repainted the prop, the yellow tips were way to large at first (heck they still may be , but they are staying) and painted the hub gray after checking several reference pics. Got the legs on just for show, maybe this time I wont break it again.. Futured up to dry tonight.

Ok, got of my fourth point of contact tonight and took a few pics.  This is where the Ka-50 stands, would say that it is 98% complete.  Might go back and apply some more weathering to it and a clear flat coat.  The base is one that I made from a cheap plaque base and some matte board.

Matt -  That is one "Mean" looking Helo.. Man I sure would hate to meet the Business end of one of those.  Fantastic paint and weathering and I like the tarp, adds to the build . Thumbs Up [tup]

Aaron, I've built a Testors kit back in the day and the detail is lacking most of the time.  The aftermarket kit will make it into a great build.  Already your pit looks fantastic.  Thanksfor sharing and I/we look forward to more progress.

Sean, the Bearcat will look great with Marine markings.  Plus I like naval aircraft in the all blue look.  I hope to have some finished pics of the hawk nosed P-40N today.

Matt, I agree, that's one of the best looking helos I have seen in awhile.  The tarp, is that how you fixed the missing door?  Fantastic ideaThumbs Up [tup]  Like Sean said it adds so much to the look of the aircraft.  I like you base, very well done.  That's something that I want to do more of.

SMJ, How can I in clear conscience turn away an orphan.  The rules do state that the build has to have a min of one year from the start date and not belong to an active GB.  Since yours is six months it doesn't fit the bill.  If the folks in this GB want to allow it then I don't have a problem.

So what do the members of this GB think? yea or na

Roy,

The "tarp" is the only way that I could think of to cover up the gaping hole where the "door" should be.  Really a very simple process, I cut a piece of kleenex to the approx size, wet it down to form it to the shape that i needed and then once it was mostly dry painted it OD Green.  Once that dryed I drybrushed it with some dark earth color and used white glue to secure it.  I think that I also took a q-tip and rolled it along the flat areas to ensure that it was laying flat where it should be.  The method that I used differed slightly from what I have read before of adding the white glue to the water when you are first forming the tarp.  All that I really need to do now is go back and touch up some of the corners.  I  also learned from this kit to not use packing peanuts ( the ones that get everywhere when you open a box ) because they have a tendency to stick on the model and leave a bit of foam where they were stuck.  I tried to pick all the pieces off but was not able to get all of them so some became places where the paint has worn off.

The Pit for the Huskey looks sweet, good work.

Love the Bearcat - Had that kit when I was a lot younger and messed it all up, nice to see one looking so nice.

I say let the man play - he promised not to return to the kit until the one year mark, but I think that it is close enough for us.

Matt

Merry Christmas

I worked on my Fiat Br 20M last night trying to repair the damage from the old tape.  It actually turned out not too bad.  I used an old stubby paint brush and dipped it in some WD40 to wipe all the residual glue from the tape off.  Worked really well as the WD40 doesn't atack the paint and evaporates pretty good with out leaving a stain.

The only problem was I pushed out a couple of windows from applying too much pressure.  I was able to reach in and re-attach one of them with a pair of tweezers but the other, which was still partially attached was behind a bulkhead that only had a small door through it.  I was able to bend a paper clip to the apporpriate shape and reach through and push it back into place after putting some white glue around the window frame.  Whew!!

The only other problem is the inside of the main canopy windows have a lot of dust and gunk on them from sitting on the shelf during renovations etc. with no way to reach in and clean them off.

Just a few small paint touch ups and I can call this one done. Big Smile [:D]
