Not a whole bunch of updates on the '66 Shelby, but I got a little bit done.  I'm stripping the chrome off of a few parts and then will get them painted.  Finished up some of the rear suspension and started on the engine.  I still have a lot to do, but I'm trying the graphite technique on the chassis to see how it comes out.  Hopefully more updates tomorrow.  Slow steps on this one... busy as can be as of late.

Joe nice touch on the seats and the exhaust looks good.

Gordy your Chevy is taking shape. I like the stance and wheels you have on it.

Hey there Gordy! I've seen that coil spring fabrication on another site and that's a great idea!! That was me starting off with a flat black engine long block and stepping the shades of paint up to where I thought looked best.

I painted my windshield washer reservoir bottle up like yours up as well with one minor difference(this is for future builds BTW) in finishing. I started with a white bottle and painted the blue as you did. After that I mixed up some flat clear coat with a drop or two of white mixed in and shot the reservoir again. This gave the fluid an "inside the plastic container" look.  Your build is going to look great man! Keep up with the pics!! Yes

Misty: Go for it on the the F1's and bikes. Just lemme know what you want to build and you're in!Cool

Anything with wheels as far as I know.  Join in.  I'd be interested to see a bike build.

We had some heavy white stuff drop on us last night so it's dead in the store today.  Good and bad, good I get to update you fine gentlemen on my build so far but bad because I'm gonna go out of business if no one comes in to see me.

Anyway, onto the update.  Sorry for the amount of pics, I don't think dial up exists anymore so it shouldn't be too much of a problem for anyone but I was over due so it had to be done.  :)  Thanks for understanding.

The '66 Chevy SS 396 Hardtop.  Molded in white, going to be Vallejo Lightning red (I think).

Some white primer and body lines with a fine pen.  I've been trying to build up body lines as I paint, not sure it's working yet but I simply can't do it afterwards. I'm too shaky and fudge it up. lol  I read someone suggested doing it this way so I'm trying it.

the 396, next time I do an engine I'm going to paint it black and dust the chevy red on like Mustang detailed in his build.  I think that's the real key to getting the colour to look accurate.  I think it was mustang who did the engine that way-sorry if I miss credited.

I did this thing where I wrapped thin solder around the springs, then painted them flat black and scraped off the paint to show the solder.  It turned out pretty good, I'm not sure how scale it looks but it seems like just enough extra detail to show the suspension a bit.

The backs look better than the front but you can just see them peeking out a bit.

So I snagged a set of Cragars from another kit, I'm not sure the ploy gt tires are accurate but they look much better than the stock steelies with hubcaps.  I read an article where the dood painted the rims with Tamiya smoke to make the chrome less toy like so I tried that.  They look pretty nice.

I read another article about 'reverse bare metal' I believe that was what it was called.  Anyway, the technique was to lay the bmf on the primer before the paint, then scrape away the paint revealing the scripting.  It was really easy and I think it turned out pretty great for a first attempt.  I did both fender scripts/flags and the badge along the trunk.

Interior, I think I've shared these already.

Under carriage.  I tried the rust flaking thing on the tank.  It turned out ok, then I messed with it and ruined it, then I fixed it and it looked ok, then I ruined it again, then I fixed it again.  I think it's still in ruined state now, I am not calling it a success just yet.

Test fitting.  I had to shorten the axle a bit to tuck the rears under nice.

I'm not sure why this set turned out upside down but you get the idea.  I fixed a few in photobucket.

And that's how she sits today.  I just started some bare metal on the body then some a/c lines need to be painted up for final assembly.  I still have a couple weeks before I can get any significant damage done.

I didn't share any of the brake booster pics.  Hey now I have something to add tomorrow :)

More crappy pics in a photobucket slide show here: http://s293.photobucket.com/user/elass0wyp0/slideshow/Scale%20Models/Revell%201966%20Chevrolet%20Impala%20SS%20396%20Hardtop?sort=3

Thanks for reading and sorry again for the length.

Bonus build time today! I'm off so I finished the front seats. I disassembled both original seats, removed flash, filled seams, painted and topped 'em off with a semi-gloss clear coat. I had tried a wash after painting and didn't like it so I repainted over it and then the semi-gloss clear.

A little more work on the exhaust this morning. I got the pipe section between the muffler and the exhaust tips painted and the drilled out tips painted as well. Still waiting on my BMF in the mail to cover the tips with and after that I'll grind up some black pastel to dry brush inside of the drilled out tips with for that sooty effect inside the pipes.

Hi Mustang,

This will be my next build after the Porsche 911 GT1 EVO. Could you add both the Porsche and the Sierra to the roster please.

I bought this kit second hand:

In fact  I didn't check it carefully enough and the box contained the contents from this kit:

The only difference is the colour of the plastic, (black vs white) and the decals and instructions. Since I want to use aftermarket decals anyway, and the model I want to build is white, it's all good.

This is a photo of my intended subject, it ran at the Bathurst 1000 in 1992.

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Hey Tony,

I had that issue with the Gremlin in the 2014 GB. I lucked out since it had an additional hood, so I cut the sides off with enough to make up the gap, then used Pro-weld to weld them back together. Acutlly worked out good. Otherwise, I would have welded styrene to the edges and trimmed/sanded until they fit. That engine is looking sweet.

Mustang, that thing shines so much it looks wet hehehe.

Mopar, my hats off to ya. That is a sharp truck.

L8TR,

Eric.

That's coming together quickly now MOPAR. Great progress, and that is a lot of red paint !

Question for you Eric, let's say when you test fit the hood that there is a significant gap between it and the body. What's the best way to address it ?

Ruddratt, the engine is mostly sprayed with Tamiya TS aerosols before assembly, with some use of their acrylics and some Humbrol enamels too.  I also used some MM gold enamel somewhere too.

Cheers

Tony

Wow, just wow.  So many great updates, really awesome work guys.  I've been absent too long, too many posts to comment on each one but really nice stuff guys.  And welcome new joiners, I'm looking forward to seeing some of those kits come together.

I've got nothing new to add but encouragement :)  I got another week before I see a day off but I'm due for a catch up post.  I have some terrible pictures to upload and then I'll have something to add.

Nice work on the Dodge MOPAR, that is something I have never attempted.

Mustang - your gloss finish looks flawless. amazing.

Joe, I think it's worth it.

I've actually made some progress on the engine and rear suspension assembly.  Tamiya's engineering is exceptional. It's not finished yet, but here is some progress photos. It's not finished just yet.

I think once it's installed you might be able to see a fraction of it through a wheel well, if the wheels, tyres and brake assembly allow it.

Cheers

Tony

What a set up this is!!!! Lots of detail and lots of great paint work! Good going so far Tony!! Yes

Tony nice looking engine.

Built the hydraulics for the rack over the cab section today and also sprayed more red. I think I may have all the primer covered.

Man, all I can say is WOW! Heck i'll say it again, WOW!

You guys are churning out some amazing realistic work.

I managed to do a little today. I sanded down the 51 fenders to fix the little holes I missed, finished up the chrome for the door panels, and started fitting the cowl induction hood on the 66 Impala.

Eric

Mopar, thanks man! Yes

Joe, I can sooooo relate to that!  I think Seamline was the actual manufacturer of my entire kit too, with "Sinkhole" and "Ejection mark" getting in on the act as well! But hey, who doesn't relish a challenge.  Wink

Thanks guys for the complements on my rig. I've used over 4 oz of red paint so far and still have more to add as I still have primer showing through in some places.

Joe nice work on cleaning up the exhaust system.

Mike your tires and rims look so real.

Thanks for the tips there Mike!

I got up early this morning and started on the exhaust which was a PIA!! The exhaust must have been manufactured by a company that I'll call "Seamline". Jeez!!! It was one continuous seam around the whole periphery of the exhaust!!!

The original exhaust:

The much cleaned up ( about an hour and a halfs worth of work) and primed replacement exhaust:

with hollowed out ends.............

That's about all I can stand today. I'll be adding color tomorrow morning to this.

Thanks fellas!

Joe, just a lot of sanding. These tires are molded really thin & flexible, and in actual rubber as opposed to vinyl.  Took a lot of sanding to get rid of that nasty seam running down the middle using 120 grit sanding sponges.  The rims were stripped of the kit chrome, primed, then hit with Alclad dark aluminum and Tamiya clear yellow.  The frame is not yet glued at the back around the roll bars, as I need to spread 'em apart to attach the seat.

Man those tires look great Mike! I mean the wheels and tires but I'm tellin you those look just like tire rubber. Whats the secret to the tire sidewall and tire tread area getting them to look like you do?

Man oh man!  Between the hot rods and the big rigs, you guys are rockin' this GB!  The attention to detail is mind blowing, and I have to add, very inspiring!  Been having a ball with this GB - makes me feel like a kid again! It's been so long since I did one of these I'd forgotten how much fun they are.  Keep up the great work fellas!

Lots of progress on the dragster.  The frame is assembled (a ton of clean up, but worth every minute). The big Goodyears are complete too.  Tomorrow night begins the fun of plumbing that big hemi. Then, with the main components done, progress will really start to pick up the pace.  Here's a few pics of what's been done to this point.....
