Darren- Glad to hear the missus is OK!

I received my decals Thursday.  Pulled a little paint off removing the old ones so I had to do some touch up last night.  Finished putting the decals on this morning, this was followed by an extremely thinned down coat of Tamiya Buff.  After that some Tamiya Smoke was used to highlight the panel lines.  Finally the exhaust staining was applied using MM Burnt Umber and the Tamiya Buff again.  Finished off with a coat of flat. 

I've got some conflicting info on the location of the wing crosses and the ID stripe on the wing.  The way I have it could be wrong but they're on there to stay! 

This will probably be my last update for a while, the real world is going to intrude on the modelling time the next few weeks.  I'll be checking in to keep track of what you guys are up to though.

Karl- It sounds as if your kit is coming along nicely.  I have had good luck with those Ediard masks as well, leaving a set on my COrsair for over a year and when I went to remove them- no residue or anything.  Beautiful!

Aaron, at the risk of further inflaming your Susannah York infatuation, she was in a series in the UK called 'We'll Meet Again' in the early 80's, based around the goings on of a US 8th AF base and the local English village.

So there you have SY and aircraft all in one package!

I can remember watching it as a kid, and being disgusted at the lack of combat footage! Ah to be 11 years old again.

Progress Update

I've sorted out all the seams from my botched attempt at putting this kit together a couple of years back, and am now fitting the canopy components. 

These have still got the Eduard masks on from when I started the kit, and they are still working perfectly, and aren't leaving a residue either!

I would post some pics, but my wife has knicked the camera and buggered off for the weekend.

That does mean plenty of building time though, in between tending to children.

 Darren I am very happy to hear that you are back and Mrs Sonia is home recovering under your attentions. What can I say I'm just a sucker for happy endings. Hopefully the soreness will pass soon and you can get back to the normal romantic things such as what me and my wife (Dee) do. ( Argue over which is more important, models or shoes) Very glad to hear some good news and know you both are home!

 Ah the kit was brand new guy. Never opened the parts that I am complaining about are actually omissions. Not part of the kit. While there are some detail improvements from the Hobby craft kit such as a bomb bay and corrected fuselage there are many small details that no effort was made to create. Here is a pic of the decaling/paint guide

 Looks ok except for one small issue the model doesn't look like that. There was a blister where you see the loop antenna. No loop antenna included. The guidance and antenna on the bottom under the F1 code is also not included must be scratch built. No pitot tube so ditto on the scratch build and the tabs on the wing flaps that show decal A's location are not there. Smooth wing edge so more detail stuff to add. Nothing to big but at least Hobby Craft's old version has all these details minus the wing tabs although a wee bit thick.

As for my prop hub cover? Well that's my fault I misplaced it somewhere safe while cleaning and can't remember. Blame the fumes again I guess.

Hey guys I'm back on board and SWMBO is making a very nice recovery from her surgery at home now. She's very tired and sore but feeling much better which is really what counts. Unfortunately for me the list of "honey do's" I have is getting longer by the hour but that's just fine by me.

Aaron, i missed out on your write up of where you got that kit? Was it 2nd hand with bits missing? Or do you have an over active carpet monster? To me, a non experten on the type, it looks great so far fella. Looking forward to seeing it badged up.

You can see how I need to clean up the dust and debree left from the violent unmasking process and a bit of touch up on the demarkation between the blue and green. Yep the navigator/bomb aimer has both hands on the bombsite peering through. Hard to get past he glare but the details show up well.

I don't know if youcan see the fad / blend well or not. After the sun goes down the camera doesn't like the shop lighting. Well off to find Susannah!

 Anyways she liked the Models so much I can't get her to leave now?

 AND after all this I still can't find my prop hub! ( You guys should never leave me alone with fresh coffee)

 Odd thing about hi CA kit many thing sem o be missing. Nothing big but litle detail stuff like antenna's the pitot tube. Odd stuff easy enough to make but not included or spoken of.

Well I faded the top colors a bit by airbrushing some old ( real old) Tamiya field Gray thinned (reconstituted) with 90% rubbing alcohol. Its effects were very suttle and after 3 coats it had blended or added just enough fade to tone it down a bit.  I also added some fine copper wire brake lines and scratch built some stuff that I promply broke off while getting the masking tape off. The masking job is ok. Pretty good for me but I still had a few spots that need touch up or cleaning. I dunno does the future coat allow for a clean up of the bleed under or tape goo?  Beats me. Guess I could actually start decaling and see what I can break doing that.

Dave- You are too kind my friend!  The talent displayed around here is humbling, you fellas do excellent work!

I put a final gloss coat of Future on the Spit last night, she should be ready for the weathering in another day or so.  The '109 got the canopy pieces installed, and tonight I plan to mask off the nose and wingtips and get her ready for some more paint!  Haven't stripped the spinner yet, and it's sitting here laughing at me (Oh, boy...the model parts are beginning to talk to me!).  But rest assured, I WILL prevail!

She is looking great so far there Guy. I'm going to use your radiator door trick on my next 109 build. I just purchased the 1/48 Hasegawa Me 109 E "Night Fighter". I think it will be a perferct candidate for your radiator detail trick. Can't wait to see some paint on it!

Not the same range of AM as Hannants, but an excellent selection of kits, tools, etc, and unlike Hannants they will ship paint without first purchasing a kit.

Don't get me wrong, I love Hannants, I just wish they were a little quicker.

Karl, i had to pay an extra Squidoo for next day delivery. With the kit came the Eduard interior set for the Hienkel. So i now have the CMK Resin (Painted in my earlier post) and the Eduard interior set. Should make for a fairly detailed glasshouse on the big bird.

P.s Who are 'Models for sale'? Not heard of that one.

Thx for the advice on the seams lads. Id scribed the top, as was fairly sure of that sucker but not so on the bottom. I will now. Anyhoo. Ive been a busy beaver with the 109 and have attached the wings and tailplanes. Ill leave the supports off untill painted.

 My intention was to build this out of the box but you know how it is LOL. I hacked the rears of the rads away and posed them open using styrene sheet.

For anyone thinking it looks like hard work. This took about 5 mins per side. I reckon they look fairly decent.

For some reason gunsights bug me. They are far too thick. So did some fettling on this one.

sorry for the quality of the pics as i took them with my phone. I believe you can actually make calls with it as well!!!

The canopy parts are drying after a soak in Future. Next is mask them, then paint. Mmmmmm. cant wait.
